Imam and Family Brutally Attacked

A teenage mosque imam and two members of his family were brutally attacked and seriously injured after they reportedly protested against local drug dealing and consumption in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi. The assault, carried out by a group of armed assailants, has sparked concern over escalating drug-related violence in the area.

The incident took place at around 9:00 am on Thursday at a three-way junction near Udayan Kindergarten School in the Serajnagar (Noachor) area under Adiabad Union. According to local accounts, the victims were targeted while walking near their home.

The injured include 17-year-old Nahid Hossain, the imam of Noayar Bari Mosque in Serajnagar, his father Zakir Hossain, aged 60, and his elder brother Jahid Hossain, aged 25. All three sustained injuries after being attacked with sharp weapons and sticks. Nahid reportedly suffered the most severe wounds, including injuries to his head and multiple parts of his body.

Family members stated that tensions had been rising in the area due to alleged drug trading involving certain local individuals. Nahid, along with some local youths, had recently spoken out against the sale and consumption of narcotics in the community. This reportedly angered a group of individuals connected to drug use and trafficking, leading to the violent retaliation.

Eyewitnesses and relatives claim that around 20–25 attackers, led by several named local individuals, ambushed Nahid while he was passing the junction. The attackers were reportedly armed with pistols, machetes, knives, and sticks. When Zakir Hossain and Jahid Hossain attempted to intervene and rescue him, they too were assaulted and injured.

Local residents later rescued the victims and rushed them to the upazila health complex. After receiving initial treatment, Nahid Hossain was transferred to a larger medical facility in Narsingdi due to the severity of his condition. The other two injured family members received primary medical care and were later discharged for further observation at home.

A local elected representative confirmed that the attack was linked to the victims’ stance against drug activity in the area, describing the incident as deeply alarming for community safety.

Law enforcement officials stated that police were dispatched immediately after receiving reports of the attack. An investigation is underway, and efforts are being made to identify and arrest those involved. However, no formal written complaint had been filed at the time of reporting.

Details of the Injured Victims

Nahid Hossain 17 Mosque Imam Head and multiple bodily injuries Referred for advanced treatment
Zakir Hossain 60 Father Minor to moderate injuries Treated locally, under observation
