Bengali Music Shines on UK Stage

In a celebration that bridged continents, the historic House of Commons in the United Kingdom recently hosted the launch of the Bengali duet ‘Prem Piyasa’, performed by the legendary vocalist Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and acclaimed singer Rubaiyat Zahan. The event was organised by British Member of Parliament Ruth Cadbury alongside internationally renowned composer and music director Raja Kashef, highlighting the growing global presence of Bengali music.

The ceremony also paid tribute to Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and his son Shah Jaman Khan, recognising their lifelong contributions to music. The event drew a distinguished audience, including celebrated Bangladeshi singer and BCB director Asif Akbar, music producer Dhrubo Guha of Dhrubo Music Station (DMS), members of the British Parliament, House of Commons officials, and prominent figures from the Bangladeshi diaspora.

The song’s lyrics were penned by National Film Award-winning lyricist Kabir Bakul, while the composition and musical arrangement were handled by Raja Kashef. The official music video was directed by Saikat Reza.

Speaking at the event, Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan expressed his admiration for the dedication of Raja Kashef and Rubaiyat Zahan, saying, “Their unwavering commitment to music has truly impressed me. My love for Bengali music is profound, and ‘Prem Piyasa’ is a heartfelt expression of that affection.”

Asif Akbar reflected on the significance of the occasion, stating, “This event has taken Bengali music one step further onto the global stage. I am proud to be part of an international platform that creates a new milestone for our music.”

Dhrubo Guha, head of Dhrubo Music Station, emphasised the station’s mission to promote Bengali music globally: “Since our inception, we have aimed to showcase Bengali music to the world. ‘Prem Piyasa’ marks an important milestone in that journey. We will continue this endeavour to ensure Bengali music gains the recognition it deserves.”

The music video for ‘Prem Piyasa’ is now available on Dhrubo Music Station’s official YouTube channel, and the song can be streamed across all major domestic and international music platforms, making it accessible to audiences worldwide.
