Two Jailed Over Parental Assault

In a distressing incident linked to drug dependency and online gambling, two young men have been sentenced to four months’ imprisonment each by a mobile court in Brahmanpara Upazila under Cumilla District, following allegations that they assaulted their fathers in separate domestic disputes.

The verdict was delivered on Monday afternoon by Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Tareq Rahman, who conducted the mobile court proceedings in response to formal complaints lodged by the victims’ families.

The convicted individuals are Shipon (23), son of Nurul Islam from Brahmanpara Sadar, and Rabiul Hasan (24), son of Mofizul Islam from South Tetabhumi village within the same upazila. Alongside the custodial sentence, both were also fined 100 Bangladeshi taka each.

According to statements provided by family members, both young men had become increasingly involved in drug consumption, with one case reportedly linked to online gambling addiction acquired during overseas employment in Malaysia. The behaviour allegedly escalated into repeated incidents of domestic violence, theft, and financial extortion to fund substance abuse.

Speaking tearfully, Rabiul Hasan’s father, Mofizul Islam, recounted that his son had been sent abroad in pursuit of better opportunities. However, after returning home, he became addicted to online gambling and subsequently drugs. He alleged that his son had assaulted him multiple times when confronted, including a recent incident early Monday morning when he was beaten after attempting to prevent drug use inside the home.

He further stated that neighbours intervened and restrained his son before informing authorities, expressing a desire for a longer custodial sentence in order to ensure rehabilitation and community safety.

Similarly, Nurul Islam, father of Shipon, described years of hardship in raising his son, stating that he had endured repeated thefts from the household, allegedly to finance drug use. He added that the situation had become unbearable and called for the strictest possible punishment.

Magistrate Tareq Rahman noted that drug abuse among young people in the region has reached concerning levels. He stated that within the past month alone, at least 13 young individuals had been sentenced through mobile court operations in similar drug-related cases in the area.

Authorities emphasised that continued enforcement actions will be taken to curb rising substance abuse and related domestic violence, which are increasingly affecting families and communities across the region.
