In a significant development stemming from the July 2024 civil uprising in Dhaka, prominent YouTuber Ar S. Fahim Chowdhury has been remanded in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of a young man, Md. Imran, in Gulshan.
The decision was handed down today, Monday, by Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Jashita Islam. State counsel Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the order, noting that the defence lawyers had applied for bail on Fahim’s behalf but requested that the hearing be scheduled for Tuesday. In response, the court sent the accused to custody ahead of the bail hearing set for tomorrow.
Fahim was initially detained yesterday afternoon, Sunday, in the Mirpur area near the city’s Zoological Park by a group of students and members of the public. He was subsequently handed over to Shah Ali police station before being transferred to Gulshan police station for formal investigation.
The charge sheet alleges that during the anti-discrimination student movement, widely referred to as the July Uprising, thousands of protesters were marching in front of Subastu Market, Shahjadpur, Gulshan, on 19 July 2024. According to the complaint, members of the then-ruling party and affiliated organisations, along with law enforcement personnel, opened fire on the demonstrators in an effort to suppress the protest.
Md. Imran, aged 30, who was returning home from work, joined the demonstration and reportedly chanted slogans in solidarity. He was seriously injured in the shooting by unidentified assailants. Despite being rushed to United Hospital in Gulshan, he succumbed to his injuries at 7:05 pm on the same day.
A murder case was subsequently filed at Gulshan police station in April 2025, with Fahim named among the accused. Investigators have collected witness statements and security camera footage from the protest site to build the case.
The table below summarises the key details of the incident:

This case has attracted widespread attention due to its political implications and the involvement of social media personalities. Legal observers note that the proceedings may set a precedent for accountability in politically charged incidents and highlight concerns regarding civilian safety during mass protests.
With the bail hearing imminent, both public interest and scrutiny of the judicial process remain intense, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Md. Imran during one of Dhaka’s most contentious civil uprisings in recent history.
