A devastating accident in rural Bangladesh has claimed the lives of four-year-old twin brothers, Taieb Sheikh and Ahmed Sheikh, in an incident that has left the local community in deep mourning and raised renewed concerns over rail safety near residential areas.
The tragedy occurred on Wednesday afternoon (1 April) in the Noapara Union area of Madhukhali Upazila, close to the Bhushna–Lokhondi Railway Station. According to local sources and police accounts, the children were struck by a passing local train travelling from Rajbari to Bhatiapara. The accident took place between approximately 1:15 pm and 2:00 pm when the twins, reportedly playing near the railway tracks, inadvertently wandered too close to the line.
Eyewitnesses said the train’s horn was heard moments before the incident, prompting nearby residents to rush towards the spot. However, the impact was instantaneous, leaving no chance of survival for the children. The victims were the sons of local businessman Akash Sheikh, whose family home is situated some distance from the tracks. Police confirmed that the children were visiting their uncle’s house, which lies much closer to the railway line, at the time of the accident.
Officers from Madhukhali Police Station, including the Officer-in-Charge Fakir Md. Taijul Rahman, visited the scene shortly after the incident. He stated that initial findings suggest the children may have approached the railway track out of curiosity or while playing unsupervised. Authorities from the railway police later recovered the bodies and completed the necessary legal formalities.
The incident has triggered widespread grief and anger among local residents. Many have called for immediate improvements in railway safety measures, particularly fencing and warning systems in areas where tracks run close to homes and villages. Community members also emphasised the urgent need for greater parental awareness and supervision of children living near active rail lines.
