In a startling escalation of rural lawlessness, a violent mob in the Keshabpur Upazila of Jessore launched a pre-planned assault on police officers following a provocative and fabricated announcement made over a local mosque’s loudspeaker. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, resulted in the temporary escape of a convicted criminal and left several law enforcement officers with significant injuries.
The chaos began during a targeted police operation in Hijoldanga village, located within the Vidyanandakati Union. Acting on specific intelligence, a police team tracked down Jahangir Alam, a notorious individual who had been evading justice after being sentenced in three separate criminal cases. While the officers successfully apprehended Alam, the situation rapidly spiralled out of control.
According to police reports, Alam attempted to create a scene of custodial torture by deliberately striking his head against a hard surface to draw blood. Seizing upon this self-inflicted injury, local accomplices gained access to the village mosque’s microphone. They broadcast a harrowing—and entirely false—claim that the police were “murdering” Alam in custody.
The effect of the announcement was instantaneous. Within minutes, a frenzied mob of approximately 50 to 60 individuals, armed with bamboo poles, sticks, and local weapons, descended upon the small police contingent. Caught off guard by the sheer volume of the crowd, the officers were subjected to a brutal physical assault. Taking advantage of the melee, the mob successfully snatched the handcuffed convict from police custody and disappeared into the darkness.
The following table details the casualties sustained by the police force during the confrontation:
| Officer Name | Rank | Injury Status | Medical Facility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asmat Ali | Sub-Inspector (SI) | Multiple blunt force traumas | Discharged after First Aid |
| Shahidul Islam | Constable | Severe bodily lacerations | Admitted to Upazila Health Complex |
| Habibullah | Constable | Soft tissue injuries | Discharged after First Aid |
Shahidul Islam, the Inspector (Investigation) of Keshabpur Police Station, condemned the “despicable” nature of the attack, noting that the misuse of a religious institution to incite violence was particularly egregious.
Following the escape, a massive manhunt was launched across the region. On Thursday afternoon, 2 April, the pursuit ended when a specialised team tracked Alam to the Ghosra Bil area, a marshy border region between Jessore’s Keshabpur and Khulna’s Dumuria. The fugitive was recaptured without further incident.
Authorities have confirmed that additional charges will be filed against Alam and the identified members of the mob for obstructing government duty, assaulting public servants, and inciting a riot. Security has been tightened in Hijoldanga to prevent further unrest.
