A 60-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an attempted sexual assault on a 10-year-old girl in the Saturia Upazila, sparking widespread concern among local residents and calls for strict legal action.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Khorshed, allegedly attempted to forcibly assault the child in the Ghior Bazar area under Satoriya Sadar Union. The victim, a young student of a local madrasa, had gone near her home to play when the incident occurred.
According to the complaint filed by the victim’s family, the incident took place on Tuesday, 31 March, around midday. The child was reportedly approached by the accused, who lured her towards a maize field. He is alleged to have made inappropriate proposals and attempted to sexually assault her after she refused his advances. The victim’s screams for help alerted nearby residents, including a man named Sirajul Islam, who rushed to the scene. Upon realising that neighbours were approaching, the accused fled, leaving the child behind.
Local residents have claimed that the accused had a history of inappropriate behaviour in the area, including repeated incidents of harassment and misconduct towards women and girls. They expressed anger over the incident and demanded exemplary punishment to prevent similar crimes in the future.
Police from the Saturia Police Station confirmed the incident and stated that a case was registered following a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s father. Law enforcement officers subsequently arrested the accused and produced him before the court.
Authorities have indicated that the investigation is ongoing, and statements from witnesses are being recorded to build a complete case file.
