Asha Bhosle’s final rites held with state honours

Veteran Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle has died in Mumbai at the age of 92, marking the end of a distinguished musical journey that spanned more than seven decades. Her passing has led to official arrangements for a state honour funeral and widespread tributes from across the Indian film industry.

According to hospital officials, she died on Sunday at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. She had been admitted after falling ill the previous night. Medical sources confirmed that she was affected by age-related health complications along with an infection. Her condition deteriorated further due to multiple organ failure, which was identified as the cause of death.

Following her death, her mortal remains were taken on Sunday evening to her residence in Lower Parel, Mumbai. The family arranged for her body to be kept at the residence so that admirers and members of the public could pay their last respects. Her son, Anand Bhosle, stated that visitors wishing to offer condolences could come from 11:00 a.m. onwards.

The family confirmed the schedule for the final rites, stating that public viewing would be held between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Monday, followed by the last rites at 4:00 p.m. at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. The ceremony is set to take place with full state honours. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected to attend. The venue also holds significance as it was previously used for the last rites of her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar.

Asha Bhosle’s career is regarded as one of the most prolific in Indian music history. Over a span of more than 70 years, she is credited with recording over 12,000 songs in more than 20 languages. Her work extended across multiple genres, including classical music, ghazals, devotional songs, and mainstream film playback singing. Her versatility and linguistic range contributed significantly to her enduring prominence in the industry.

She was the recipient of several major national honours during her lifetime, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Padma Vibhushan, and multiple National Film Awards. These awards recognised her long-standing contribution to Indian cinema and music.

Following the announcement of her death, tributes poured in from across the film industry. Numerous actors, singers, and filmmakers expressed their condolences publicly. Among them were Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vicky Kaushal, and filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma. Singer Shreya Ghoshal and actor Kamal Haasan also shared messages of condolence.

Actor Manoj Bajpayee noted that he grew up listening to her songs and described her voice as deeply influential. Actor Ram Charan described her passing as a major and irreplaceable loss for Indian music, stating that her voice carried a unique artistic quality.

In addition, several prominent personalities including lyricist Javed Akhtar, actress Shabana Azmi, musician A. R. Rahman, and actress Vidya Balan visited her residence in Mumbai to pay their final respects following the news of her death.
