A tragic incident in Laxmipur has left a retired traffic police constable dead and three others injured after a violent domestic attack involving a sharp weapon and a fall from a residential building.
The incident occurred on Monday morning in the Panchanagar area of Lakshmipur municipal town, at the rented residence of a family living in the Peshkar Bari building. The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Nasir Ahmed, a retired traffic police constable originally from Purba Ekhlaspur village in Faridganj upazila of Chandpur district.
According to local sources and family members, Nasir Ahmed had been living in the rented house with his family for approximately seven years following his service in the police force, from which he retired in August of the previous year. He was residing with his younger son at the time of the incident, while his wife and elder son, who is reportedly differently abled, were away.
Preliminary accounts suggest that Nasir Ahmed attacked his sleeping son, Imran Ahmed, a college student, with a sharp weapon, leaving him seriously injured. In a distressed and partially unclothed state, he reportedly exited the residence, where neighbour Mizanur Rahman Swapan attempted to assist him. However, Nasir allegedly attacked Swapan as well, inflicting injuries.
A third individual, also named Nasir, is said to have intervened in an attempt to restrain the situation but was likewise injured during the assault. Following the series of attacks, the retired constable reportedly jumped from the roof of the three-storey building, sustaining critical injuries.
All four injured individuals were rescued and transported to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, where Nasir Ahmed later succumbed to his injuries after approximately three hours of treatment. The remaining injured victims were transferred for advanced medical care to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while one individual continues to receive treatment at the district hospital.
Medical officials confirmed the fatalities and injuries upon admission, noting the severity of the wounds sustained. Law enforcement authorities stated that initial information indicates the possibility of mental health-related issues, although the matter remains under active investigation.
Police from Lakshmipur recovered the injured from the scene and ensured their immediate hospitalisation. Officials have emphasised that the exact motive and circumstances will be clarified following a comprehensive inquiry.
