Two Arrested for Gang Rape in Sunamganj District

The Bangladesh Police have apprehended two individuals in connection with the gang rape of a housewife in the Sunamganj Sadar Upazila. The arrests were executed during a targeted police operation on Sunday, 12 April, at approximately 11:00 pm. The incident, which has led to a formal investigation by local law enforcement, occurred in the Lalpur area of the district.

Details of the Incident

According to police reports and local sources, the assault took place late on Friday night, 10 April, at approximately midnight. The victim was alone in her residence within the Lalpur cluster village (Guchhagram) under the Gourarang Union of Sunamganj Sadar.

The two suspects, identified as Mokshad Ali and Yasin Mia, reportedly entered the premises under the pretext of searching for the victim’s husband. Upon finding her alone, the suspects proceeded to commit the gang rape. Following the assault, the victim was found in a critical condition and was immediately rescued by local residents.

Medical Condition of the Victim

The victim was transported to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital, where she remains under medical care. Medical professionals at the facility have described her physical condition as precarious. Due to the severity of her injuries, she has been placed under close observation within a high-dependency or intensive monitoring unit. The hospital is continuing to provide the necessary treatment and is conducting relevant forensic examinations as required by law.

Police Action and Suspect Identification

Following the formal filing of a complaint by the victim’s husband, the Sunamganj Sadar Model Police initiated an investigation and launched a manhunt for the named suspects. The operation led by Inspector (Investigation) Md. Arif Ullah resulted in the successful apprehension of both men on Sunday night.

Legal Proceedings

Inspector (Investigation) Md. Arif Ullah confirmed to the media that the arrests were made based on the specific allegations brought forward by the victim’s husband. The police have processed the case under the relevant sections of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

On Monday afternoon, the two accused were produced before the district court for the commencement of legal proceedings. Law enforcement authorities have indicated that the investigation is ongoing to ensure all evidence is gathered for the judicial process. The Sunamganj Sadar Model Police Department continues to monitor the situation to maintain local order and ensure the safety of the residents in the Lalpur cluster village.
