Death Row Inmate Dies Dhaka

A 73-year-old death row prisoner has died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after being brought in from the central prison in Keraniganj, on the outskirts of Dhaka. The deceased, identified as Khan Md Torab Ali, was declared dead on Tuesday evening (14 April) at approximately 6:00 pm by attending emergency department physicians.

According to prison authorities, the inmate had been suffering from illness while in custody. When his condition deteriorated, prison guards, including warder Ershad and several other officers, immediately transferred him from Dhaka Central Jail to DMCH in an attempt to secure urgent medical treatment. Despite these efforts, doctors on duty examined him upon arrival and formally pronounced him dead.

The incident was confirmed by Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, who stated that the body had been placed in the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. The purpose of the autopsy is to determine the exact cause of death, in line with standard procedures for custodial deaths.

Prison sources further reported that Khan Md Torab Ali was an inmate in connection with a long-standing criminal case filed at Manikganj Police Station in 1991. The case, numbered 07/(6) 1991, included charges under Sections 302, 324, and 114 of the Penal Code, relating respectively to murder, voluntarily causing hurt, and abetment. He hailed from Char Hijuli village in Manikganj Sadar Upazila.

Authorities have not yet disclosed detailed information regarding the nature of his recent illness or whether he had been receiving ongoing treatment within the prison system prior to his transfer. However, it is common practice for seriously ill inmates to be shifted to specialised medical facilities when their condition becomes critical.

The body remains under the custody of the DMCH morgue authorities, pending completion of post-mortem procedures and formal administrative requirements before handover to the family or prison officials.
