JCD Convenes Investigation Committee Following Assault on Journalists at Shahbag

DHAKA — The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, has formally established a four-member investigation committee to probe an incident in which several members of the Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (DUJA) were injured. The casualties occurred during a period of heightened tension between JCD activists and former leaders of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) at Shahbag Police Station.

The decision was ratified during an emergency organisational meeting of the JCD held at the DUCSU cafeteria on Friday, 24 April 2026. In addition to the investigative measures, the student organisation has issued a formal apology to the journalists’ association regarding the physical altercations that took place.

Incident Background and Confrontation

The conflict originated on Thursday, 23 April 2026, stemming from a contentious and allegedly “indecent” social media post on Facebook. The digital dispute escalated into a physical confrontation at Shahbag Police Station, where JCD activists had gathered. Journalists representing DUJA arrived at the precinct to document the unfolding situation and the interactions between JCD members and DUCSU leaders.

During the course of their professional duties, several media personnel were reportedly targeted and sustained injuries as the situation deteriorated. According to a statement released on the JCD’s official Facebook portal, the organisation acknowledged that “unintended incidents” occurred involving its grassroots activists and members of the press.

Following the emergency session on Friday, JCD General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir expressed regret over the violence.

“We have formed an inquiry committee to investigate the unfortunate incident at Shahbag, where several members of the Dhaka University Journalists’ Association were injured. We express our sincere apologies to the journalists’ association for this occurrence,” Nasir stated.

Composition and Mandate of the Investigation Committee

The JCD central command has appointed a high-level four-member panel to oversee the inquiry. The committee comprises:

• Zahir Raihan Ahmed, Vice-President of the JCD Central Committee.

• A.B.M. Ijazul Kabir Ruel, Vice-President of the JCD Central Committee.

• Anisur Rahman Khandaker Anik, Vice-President of the JCD Dhaka University Unit.

• Nasir Uddin Shaon, Senior Joint General Secretary of the JCD Dhaka University Unit.

The committee has been granted a strict mandate to conduct a “proper investigation” into the allegations of assault and harassment against media workers. According to the official notification, the panel is required to submit a comprehensive written report detailing their findings to the JCD Central Parliament within the next five days.

Institutional Response and Media Safety

The assault has sparked significant concern within the media community at Dhaka University. The Dhaka University Journalists’ Association, which represents correspondents from various national print and electronic media outlets stationed at the campus, typically coordinates with student political wings to ensure the safety of reporters during political demonstrations.

The JCD leadership indicated that the emergency meeting was called specifically to address the breach of conduct and the resulting friction with the press corps. The organisation emphasised that the investigation is intended to identify specific individuals responsible for the violence and to prevent a recurrence of such hostilities.

Shahbag, situated adjacent to the Dhaka University campus, frequently serves as a focal point for student political activity and law enforcement interventions. The involvement of DUCSU leaders—who often hold significant influence over campus politics—added to the volatility of the Thursday night encounter.

The JCD has signalled that disciplinary action may follow the submission of the investigative report if members are found to have violated the organisation’s code of conduct or participated in the targeted assault on journalists. As of Friday afternoon, the injured journalists are reportedly receiving necessary medical attention, while the journalists’ association continues to monitor the progress of the internal JCD inquiry.
