Bench Strength Priority for Mushtaq Ahmed

Following Bangladesh’s encouraging ODI series victory against New Zealand, the national side has shifted focus to the upcoming T20 series with renewed confidence and heightened expectations. Preparations are underway in Chattogram, where the team is undergoing an intensive training camp aimed at sharpening skills and building depth ahead of major international tournaments.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday (25 April), Bangladesh’s spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed outlined the strategic direction the team is pursuing. According to him, the immediate priority is not only short-term success in the T20 series but also the long-term development of a stronger and more reliable bench strength.

Mushtaq emphasised that the inclusion of several new faces in the T20 squad presents a valuable opportunity for emerging cricketers to prove their worth on the international stage. He noted that exposure at this level is crucial for identifying dependable backup players who can step up when required. Strengthening this reserve pool, he added, is essential for sustained success in upcoming global competitions.

The coach also stressed the importance of increasing match exposure before major tournaments such as the T20 World Cup. In his view, consistent participation in international fixtures plays a vital role in boosting players’ confidence and enhancing their mental resilience under pressure.

A particular focus of Mushtaq’s coaching efforts has been leg-spinner Rishad Hossain. While praising Rishad’s natural ability with leg-spin, he pointed out that there is still room for improvement, particularly in his googly variation and overall bowling action. Technical refinement, he believes, will elevate Rishad’s effectiveness in high-pressure situations.

Another key area highlighted by Mushtaq is the significance of bowling partnerships. He explained that modern T20 cricket is not solely dependent on individual brilliance but also on coordinated efforts between bowlers operating in tandem. Effective partnerships, he noted, can restrict scoring opportunities and create sustained pressure on opposition batting line-ups. He referred to recent ODI performances as examples where both batting and bowling partnerships played decisive roles in shaping match outcomes.
