Bangladesh Remittance Inflow Exceeds £21 Billion in First 26 Days of April

The Bangladesh Bank has reported a significant surge in inward remittances, with expatriate earnings exceeding $2.71 billion (approximately £2.17 billion or 331.59 billion BDT) during the first 26 days of April 2026. This data, released on Monday, 27 April 2026, indicates a robust growth trend in the country’s secondary income account, providing a vital cushion for national foreign exchange reserves.

According to Arif Hossain Khan, the spokesperson for the central bank, the total remittance volume recorded between 1 April and 26 April reached $2,718.0 million. Calculated at the prevailing exchange rate of 122 BDT per US Dollar, this inflow represents a substantial injection of liquidity into the domestic economy.

Comparative Analysis: Year-on-Year Growth

A comparative review of the banking sector’s data reveals a marked increase in expatriate contributions compared to the previous year. During the corresponding 26-day period in April 2025, the total remittance received was $2.27 billion.

The current figures for 2026 represent a year-on-year growth rate of 19.60%. Financial analysts attribute this rise to the increasing preference for formal banking channels among the Bangladeshi diaspora and the central bank’s ongoing efforts to streamline digital transfer platforms. On Sunday, 26 April alone, the country received approximately 16.95 billion BDT in expatriate earnings, maintaining the high daily average observed throughout the month.

Fiscal Year Performance and Economic Impact

The performance of the current fiscal year (FY 2025–26), which commenced on 1 July 2025, shows even more pronounced growth. Between 1 July 2025 and 26 April 2026, the total cumulative remittance inflow reached $28.92 billion.

In contrast, during the same timeframe of the preceding fiscal year, the total stood at $24.05 billion. This reflects an overall fiscal year increase of 20.20%. The sustained growth in these transfers is a critical component of Bangladesh’s macroeconomic stability, particularly in managing the balance of payments and supporting the purchasing power of rural households.

Strategic Context and Banking Policy

The Bangladesh Bank has recently implemented several measures to incentivise the use of official channels for fund transfers. These include:

  • Digital Integration: Expansion of the Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and mobile financial services to ensure near-instantaneous credit to beneficiaries.

  • Exchange Rate Flexibility: The adoption of a more market-oriented exchange rate, currently positioned around 122 BDT per Dollar, which has reduced the discrepancy between formal and informal market rates.

  • Incentive Schemes: The government continues to provide a percentage-based cash incentive on remittances sent through authorised banks, encouraging expatriates to avoid ‘hundi’ or other unregulated systems.

Future Outlook for Remittance Inflows

As the fiscal year nears its conclusion in June, the central bank expects the total remittance volume to reach record heights. The period leading up to major religious and social festivals typically sees a spike in transfers, and the data from April suggests that this seasonal trend is being amplified by a larger volume of workers abroad and more efficient financial intermediation.

While the inflow of over 331 billion BDT in just 26 days marks a technical success for the banking sector, officials remain focused on ensuring that these funds are channelled into productive investments and infrastructure projects. The central bank’s spokesperson emphasized that the transparency and security of the transfer process remain top priorities to ensure that the “remittance warriors”—the millions of Bangladeshis working across the Middle East, Europe, and South East Asia—continue to support the national economy with confidence.
