US Plans Maritime Security Coalition

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime chokepoint, remains at the centre of escalating geopolitical and economic tensions as disruptions in the region continue to affect global trade and energy markets. With Iran exercising significant influence over the waterway, instability has intensified concerns over the uninterrupted flow of international shipping and crude oil supplies.

According to a report by Reuters, the United States State Department has begun reaching out to partner countries with the aim of forming a new international coalition to safeguard navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The initiative is intended to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through one of the world’s most strategically important shipping lanes.

A statement issued by the US State Department on 28 April confirmed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has approved a new initiative titled the “Maritime Freedom Construct” (MFC). The programme is described as a joint effort between the US State Department and the Department of Defense (Pentagon), designed to strengthen maritime security cooperation with allied nations.

The statement outlined that the MFC represents an early but critical step towards establishing a post-conflict maritime security framework in the Middle East. It emphasised that the initiative is intended to support long-term energy security, protect essential maritime infrastructure, and uphold freedom of navigation across key sea routes.

Under the proposed structure, the US State Department will act as the central diplomatic coordination hub, engaging with partner states and the global shipping industry. Meanwhile, operational coordination will be managed by the Pentagon through the US Central Command (CENTCOM) headquarters in Florida, which will maintain direct communication with vessels and oversee real-time maritime traffic coordination.

The initiative comes amid heightened tensions in the region following a conflict involving the United States and Israel, which reportedly began two months ago and has significantly disrupted activity in the Strait of Hormuz. The resulting instability has affected global oil supply chains and contributed to a sharp rise in energy prices, with Brent crude reaching as high as $125 per barrel at one point—the highest level in four years.

In parallel, Washington is reportedly considering tightening a naval blockade targeting Iran’s oil exports as diplomatic negotiations remain stalled. US President Donald Trump is also expected to receive briefings on potential renewed military strike options against Iran, according to sources cited in the report.

Iran has issued strong warnings in response, stating that continued pressure and sanctions could trigger what it described as “unprecedented military measures”, potentially further restricting navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has consistently maintained that its nuclear programme is peaceful in nature.

A Pentagon official has estimated that the ongoing conflict has so far cost the United States approximately $25 billion. Analysts warn that prolonged instability could have wider consequences for the global economy, particularly through sustained inflationary pressure driven by rising energy costs. Concerns have also been raised about the risk of further escalation in regional tensions across the Middle East.
