Arrest Made Following Fatal Auto-Rickshaw Hijacking in Raiganj

Police in the Raiganj Upazila of Sirajganj have apprehended a suspect and recovered a stolen vehicle following the targeted killing of an auto-rickshaw driver. The incident, which involved the victim being fatally assaulted before his vehicle was stolen, has led to an ongoing criminal investigation by local authorities.

Recovery and Arrest

On Thursday afternoon, the primary suspect was produced before a court following his arrest the previous evening. The individual, identified as 27-year-old Shamim Uddin—son of Anwar Hossain from Jahangirgati village in Tarash Upazila—was taken into custody during a police raid conducted on Wednesday evening.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Raiganj Police Station, Mr. Md. Ahsanuzzaman, confirmed that the stolen auto-rickshaw was found in the suspect’s possession at his residence in Jahangirgati. Shamim Uddin has been charged with receiving and holding the stolen property linked to the homicide.

Chronology of the Incident

The victim, identified as 25-year-old Naeem Hossain, was a resident of Maltinagar village in Salanga Thana and the son of Nazrul Islam. Naeem was primarily employed as a mason but operated an auto-rickshaw as a secondary source of income.

According to police reports and family statements, the sequence of events unfolded as follows:

• Tuesday Morning: Naeem left his residence with his auto-rickshaw to seek passengers.

• Tuesday Night: When he failed to return home, his family initiated a search, though his whereabouts remained unknown throughout the night.

• Wednesday Morning: Local authorities discovered Naeem’s body in the Khoichala Bil (wetland) area. The victim had sustained a fatal throat injury.

• Wednesday Evening: Following a post-mortem examination, the body was released to the family for burial. Simultaneously, police tracked the stolen vehicle to the neighbouring Tarash Upazila.

Legal Proceedings and Investigation

Following the discovery of the body, the victim’s wife, Khadija Khatun, filed a formal case at the police station against unidentified assailants.

OC Md. Ahsanuzzaman stated that the police department initiated an immediate manhunt to recover the vehicle and apprehend those responsible for the hijacking and murder. While Shamim Uddin is currently in custody, the police have clarified that the investigation remains active. Efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other accomplices suspected of direct involvement in the killing.
