Congratulations – Happy Birthday to the distinguished Jatra Empress Jotsna Biswas

Jotsna Biswas stands as a luminous figure in Bangladesh’s folk theatre and Jatra tradition, a name that requires no introduction within the cultural arena. Through her talent, dedication, and lifelong commitment to performance art, she has earned the revered title of “Jatra Empress,” a recognition of her extraordinary contribution to this traditional form of theatre.

She is the wife of the celebrated stage actor Amolendu Biswas. Their family is deeply rooted in the performing arts, continuing a strong cultural legacy. Their daughter Aruna Biswas is a well-known actress in film and television, while their son Mithu Biswas works as a theatre director. Together, they represent a family that has significantly contributed to the enrichment of Bangladeshi performing arts.

Jotsna Biswas was born on 2 May in Sirajganj. However, many often associate her with Manikganj, as her family established a permanent residence in Jabra village there to support the needs of travelling Jatra artists. Despite this association, her roots and early cultural influences remain firmly connected to Sirajganj.

From her early childhood, she showed a deep passion for music, acting, and stage performance. She began her professional acting career in 1960 and went on to perform in nearly three hundred Jatra plays. Her commanding stage presence, emotional depth, and powerful character portrayals earned her immense popularity and admiration among audiences across the country.

Alongside stage performances, she has also contributed to television dramas and films. Beyond acting, she has been actively involved in research and writing on folk culture, working to preserve and promote traditional performing arts. She has also inspired younger generations of artists through her involvement in cultural organisations.

In recognition of her outstanding contribution to the arts, she was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2011, one of the highest civilian honours in Bangladesh. She has also received numerous accolades including the Babisaas Lifetime Honour 2015, a gold crown from Amar Koyekjon Shilpi Goshthi in 2010, and recognition from Nagorik Natya Sampradaya.

Currently, she resides in Toronto, Canada, with her son, daughter-in-law, and grandson. Even in her expatriate life, she remains connected to cultural activities within the Bangladeshi community.
