A Union Parishad member in Cox’s Bazar’s Chakaria upazila has been accused of eloping with a married woman and subsequently entering into a marriage contract with her, according to local sources and statements from the affected family.
The individual in question is Mizanur Rahman, a member of Ward No. 7 under the Surajpur–Manikpur Union Parishad. He is reported to be a father of three children. The woman involved is Hasna Akter Rumi (28), a mother of two children and the wife of a CNG auto-rickshaw driver from the same locality.
Background of the Incident
Local accounts state that Hasna Akter Rumi had been married in 2012 to Md Osman Goni (38) through social and religious formalities. The couple had been living together for approximately 14 years and have one son and one daughter.
Osman Goni has alleged that due to his occupational absence from home for extended periods, Mizanur Rahman developed a relationship with his wife. He further claims that this relationship gradually developed into an elopement.
According to the complaint, on 28 April in the morning, Hasna Akter Rumi left her residence along with her younger daughter. She allegedly left with Mizanur Rahman. The complainant further stated that she took approximately Tk 450,000 in cash and around 3.5 bhori of gold ornaments from the household.
Subsequent Developments
Local sources report that after leaving, Mizanur Rahman and Hasna Akter Rumi completed a marriage contract through a notary public. It is further reported that they have since been living together in a rented house located in the Sabujbag area of Chakaria Municipality.
Efforts to obtain a statement from Mizanur Rahman were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone remained unreachable despite repeated attempts.
Administrative Response
Rupayan Deb, the administrator of Surajpur–Manikpur Union Parishad and Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Chakaria Upazila, stated that under applicable legal provisions, permission from the first wife is required in cases of a second marriage. He noted that it was not confirmed whether such procedures had been followed in this case.
