A tragic road accident on the Cumilla–Sylhet regional highway in Debidwar, Cumilla, has claimed the life of a young madrasa student after he fell from his father’s motorcycle and was fatally run over by a lorry in a horrifying sequence of events witnessed by his father.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning (3 May) in the New Market area, directly in front of Azgar Ali School. According to initial reports, the identity of the deceased child could not be confirmed immediately following the accident.
Eyewitnesses described a devastating chain of events. The father and son were travelling together on a motorcycle when the rider attempted to overtake a bus on the busy highway. At that moment, a lorry suddenly appeared ahead. In an attempt to avoid a collision, the father braked abruptly, causing the motorcycle to lose balance and skid on the road.
The impact threw the child onto the roadway, leaving him critically injured. Before he could be rescued from the spot, another lorry approaching from behind ran over him, resulting in fatal injuries. The entire incident unfolded within moments, leaving the father helpless as he watched his child die in front of him.
Local residents rushed to the scene and immediately rescued the injured boy, transporting him to a nearby hospital. However, doctors on duty declared him dead upon arrival. It has since been reported that the child was a student of a madrasa located near Azgar Ali School.

Following the tragedy, local resident Alamgir expressed strong concern over the poor condition of the road section where the accident occurred. He alleged that potholes and deteriorating surfaces in the area have long posed a serious risk to motorists. According to him, regular maintenance and improved safety measures could have prevented such a devastating loss of life.
Authorities have also begun an investigation into the incident. Officer-in-Charge Moniruzzaman of Debidwar Police Station confirmed that police recovered the body from the scene and that legal procedures are currently underway. Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of unsafe overtaking, poor road conditions, and the vulnerability of passengers on busy regional highways, particularly when multiple heavy vehicles are involved.
