Internal Discord Within Jamalpur BNP Captured in Viral Audio

A contentious audio recording involving two high-ranking local leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) affiliate organisations in Jamalpur has surfaced on social media, prompting widespread local scrutiny. The leaked telephonic conversation, which lasts approximately one minute, features a volatile exchange between the President of the District Sramik Dal (labour wing) and the President of the District Matsyajibi Dal (fishermen’s wing). The dialogue is primarily concerned with allegations of theft and the unauthorised management of official tender documents.

Details of the Social Media Leak

The audio clip was disseminated on Saturday, 2 May 2026, after being uploaded by a social media user identified as Ektiur Hossain Sagar. The recording captures an aggressive confrontation initiated by Sheikh Md. Abdus Sobhan, the President of the Jamalpur District Sramik Dal, directed at Abdul Halim, the President of the Jamalpur District Matsyajibi Dal.

In the recorded material, the interaction commences with Mr Halim offering a traditional greeting, which is promptly rebuffed by Mr Sobhan. The latter repeatedly employs the epithet “thief” to describe Mr Halim, alleging that the latter had misappropriated property belonging to others and relocated it without prior institutional authorisation or collective consent.

Key highlights from the recorded transcript include:

  • Halim: “Brother, As-salamu alaykum.”

  • Sobhan: “You son of a thief, why are you not answering the phone? You have stolen people’s things and moved them elsewhere. Why did you not pick up?”

  • Halim: “Brother, who are you talking to?”

  • Sobhan: “I am calling you a thief. You committed the theft. On what basis did you do this? We had already reached a collective decision.”

  • Halim: “Brother, please mind your language; our relationship is not of this nature.”

  • Sobhan: “I do not care for our relationship. You have insulted me in front of thousands of my activists. Why did you not inform me before committing this theft?”

During the altercation, Mr Halim attempted to mitigate the accusations by advising Mr Sobhan to address his grievances toward other individuals, specifically mentioning a “Shahin Master” and “Aminul,” rather than holding him singularly responsible.

Context: The Sand Quarry Lease Dispute

Following the viral circulation of the recording, Sheikh Md. Abdus Sobhan provided a formal statement to clarify the underlying cause of his anger. He explained that the conflict originated from the bidding process for a local sand quarry (balu ghat) lease. According to Mr Sobhan, a consensus had been established among the party’s local leadership regarding the collective submission of Bank Drafts (BD) for the tender.

Mr Sobhan alleged that Mr Halim had been entrusted with the responsibility of depositing all the group’s bank drafts. Instead, he claimed, Mr Halim “stole” and concealed the agreed-upon drafts, submitting only those that served his personal preferences. “We had made a unanimous decision, yet he unilaterally altered it. My remarks were born of profound frustration over this perceived betrayal,” Mr Sobhan remarked. He further specified that the conversation took place on 19 April 2026.

Institutional Implications and Local Feedback

When approached for a response, Abdul Halim declined to offer any further elaboration on the specifics of the confrontation. He noted that he had no additional statement to provide beyond what was already audible in the recording, effectively letting the clip stand as his position.

The emergence of this recording has caused a significant stir within the political circles of Jamalpur. Local observers and party loyalists have expressed a variety of reactions, with many condemning the use of abusive language by senior leaders of the BNP’s subsidiary wings. The public exposure of such internal fractures is regarded by political analysts as a setback for organisational discipline, particularly regarding the transparency of local government leases.

This incident is the latest in a series of setbacks for the local party structure. It follows the recent departure of a former leader of the Chhatra Dal (student wing), who announced his resignation from politics via a social media post, citing personal reasons. To date, the central committee of the BNP has not intervened or issued a formal directive regarding the conduct of the two district presidents or the integrity of the sand quarry tender process in Jamalpur.
