Renowned musical artist Sujit Mustafa and celebrated dancer Munmun Ahmed are set to collaborate on stage for the first time in their professional careers. Despite being married since 1993, the couple has maintained independent professional trajectories for over thirty years. Their inaugural joint performance, titled ‘An Evening of Music and Dance’, is scheduled to take place on 15 May at the Hotel InterContinental Dhaka. The event is being organised by the Artist Club.
The decision to perform together follows persistent requests from their audience. According to Munmun Ahmed, while both artists have frequently performed solo sets for the Artist Club, patrons often enquired about the possibility of a combined showcase. Ahmed noted that their deep mutual understanding, fostered over three decades of marriage, is expected to create a unique atmosphere on stage.
Regarding the professional dynamics of working with her spouse, Ahmed acknowledged the inherent challenges of performing alongside a musician of Mustafa’s calibre. However, she characterised the opportunity as a source of great joy and professional inspiration rather than a mere domestic collaboration.
The event is structured as a two-hour performance, with the following components:
Solo Vocal Performance: Sujit Mustafa will lead the programme for approximately ninety minutes. His repertoire will include original compositions, popular classics, and songs penned by his father, the late scholar and lyricist Abu Hena Moctafa Kamal.
Solo Dance Performance: Munmun Ahmed will perform individual dance sequences.
Joint Segments: The highlight of the evening will feature two specific segments where Mustafa’s live vocals will accompany Ahmed’s dance performance simultaneously.
Both artists bring nearly half a century of experience to this event. Sujit Mustafa has been involved in musical practice and performance for over five decades, establishing himself as a prominent figure in the Bangladeshi music industry. Similarly, Munmun Ahmed has dedicated approximately fifty years to the art of dance, specifically gaining acclaim for her expertise in the Kathak genre.
