Simmons Aims for New Milestone in Mirpur

Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons has underscored his ambition to forge a new chapter in the nation’s cricketing history, rather than dwelling on past achievements. Speaking at a press conference in Mirpur ahead of the upcoming Test series against Pakistan, Simmons addressed the weight of expectations following Bangladesh’s recent successes in the longest format of the game.

Moving Beyond Historic Success

The upcoming match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium marks the first time these two nations have met in a Test match since Bangladesh’s landmark series victory in Pakistan in 2024. During that tour, played under former coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, Bangladesh achieved a significant milestone by winning two consecutive matches in Rawalpindi. This was a monumental shift in statistics, as Bangladesh had failed to secure a single victory in their previous 13 Test encounters against Pakistan.

Despite the significance of that 2-0 series sweep, Simmons remained focused on the present. “That is history,” Simmons remarked regarding the Rawalpindi victory. “That history is gone. We want to create new history; we are looking forward to Friday, let’s see what happens. What happened before doesn’t matter now.”

However, he conceded that such victories provide an internal psychological boost. He noted that winning the last encounter serves as a source of motivation, though he reminded his squad that the context has changed. “We are in Bangladesh now, not Pakistan. We have to leave those things behind and focus on this match,” he added.

Managing Expectations

The upcoming fixture is Bangladesh’s first Test match of the current calendar year. Their last Test series, held in November against Ireland, resulted in a 2-0 victory for the Tigers. This streak of success has inevitably heightened public anticipation.

Simmons, however, suggested that the pressure of expectation largely exists outside the team environment. He estimated that “95 per cent of expectations” are external, coming from the media and the public. He emphasised that internal focus remains strictly on preparation and execution, stating that relying on expectations from previous series would not be beneficial to the players’ performance.

Recent Bangladesh Test Series Results

Opponent Venue Period Result
Ireland Home November (Previous Year) Won (2-0)
Pakistan Away 2024 Won (2-0)
Pakistan Home Current (2026) Upcoming

Transitioning Between Formats

The transition from limited-overs cricket to the Test format is another area of interest. In recent months, Bangladesh has been heavily involved in white-ball cricket, including an ODI series victory against Pakistan in March and matches against New Zealand.

Simmons dismissed concerns regarding the difficulty of switching to the “red-ball” format. He described the transition as a “mental matter,” noting that several members of the Test squad have not been involved in white-ball fixtures and have been training specifically with the red ball for several months. Consequently, the head coach anticipates a smooth adjustment for the team as they prepare for the first Test beginning this Friday.
