Two individuals lost their lives in separate road traffic accidents across two different localities in the capital, Dhaka, on Sunday. The fatal incidents occurred during the morning and afternoon hours in the Shanir Akhra area of Jatrabari and the Dholaipar area of Shyampur, respectively.
The deceased have been identified as 28-year-old motorcyclist Md Sajid Hasan and 38-year-old van driver Md Shafiqul Islam. Information obtained from Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) sources and the relatives of the victims confirmed the details of the incidents.
The first accident took place in the morning in the Rayerbagh area of Shanir Akhra. According to DMCH sources and eyewitness accounts, Md Sajid Hasan was riding his motorcycle when a CNG-driven auto-rickshaw veered close and pressed against his vehicle from the side before speeding away. The impact caused Hasan to lose control and thrown heavily onto the road, sustaining critical injuries.
Sohan, a pedestrian who witnessed the incident, stated that the auto-rickshaw closely forced the motorcycle off balance before fleeing the scene. Passers-by immediately rescued Hasan and rushed him to a local hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He was admitted to the One-Stop Emergency Centre (OSEC) of the hospital, where the attending doctor pronounced him dead at 11:42 am while undergoing treatment.
Sajid Hasan was the son of Md Solaiman, hailing from Shrirampur village in the Ramganj Upazila of Lakshmipur district. Professionally, he was employed as a Product Executive at Al-Madina Pharmaceuticals Limited.
The second casualty occurred at approximately 1:30 pm in front of the Jalalabad Hamida CNG Pump in Dholaipar, under the jurisdiction of Shyampur Police Station.
An eyewitness and rescuer, Mizan Shekh, reported that Shafiqul Islam was driving a manual van loaded with raw materials for manufacturing cardboard boxes. At that moment, a speeding battery-operated three-wheeler (locally known as an auto-mishuk) rammed into the van, causing it to overturn completely. Shafiqul Islam became trapped underneath the overturned vehicle and sustained severe injuries. He was rescued by bystanders and promptly transported to DMCH, where doctors pronounced him dead at around 2:45 pm.
The victim’s elder brother, Shariful Islam, stated that Shafiqul was originally a battery-operated rickshaw puller by profession. He belonged to Rajanagar village in the Palashbari Upazila of Gaibandha district and was currently residing in a rented house in the Basabo area of Sabujbagh in Dhaka.
