Fatal Clash Over Land Dispute in Sribardi

A long-standing land dispute escalated into a violent clash between two factions in Sribardi Upazila under the Sherpur district, leaving one young man dead and at least 15 others injured. Following the fatal altercation, an aggrieved mob of local residents attacked and set fire to the residence of a local Union Parishad (UP) member. The incident transpired on Monday morning in Madarpur village, located within the upazila.

Background and Escalation of Violence

According to local sources and law enforcement authorities, there had been a prolonged dispute regarding land ownership between the family of the deceased and the supporters of a local UP member, Nurul Amin. On Monday morning, fresh tensions flared up between the two groups following an altercation regarding the disputed property.

The situation deteriorated rapidly as both factions, armed with local weapons, engaged in a fierce physical confrontation. During the clash, a 32-year-old man identified as Ashraful Islam, a resident of Madarpur village in the Khoria Kazirchar Union, was critically assaulted by the supporters of UP Member Nurul Amin.

Local residents rescued the severely injured Ashraful Islam and immediately transported him to the Sribardi Upazila Health Complex. Upon arrival, the attending line of physicians examined him and pronounced him dead.

Casualties and Medical Response

The violent confrontation resulted in a significant number of casualties, with at least 15 individuals sustaining injuries of varying severity. The wounded individuals were promptly evacuated from the site and admitted to the Sribardi Upazila Health Complex and the Sherpur District Sadar Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Medical professionals have indicated that the condition of several patients remains critical.

Retaliatory Arson and Police Intervention

As news of Ashraful Islam’s death circulated through the locality, his relatives and aggrieved villagers gathered in protest. The situation escalated when the mob targeted the residence of UP Member Nurul Amin in Madarpur village. The crowd launched an assault on the property and subsequently set it on fire, causing extensive damage. Several rooms of the house, along with furniture and domestic belongings, were completely destroyed in the blaze.

Upon receiving reports of the unrest, teams from the local police department and the Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the scene. The firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze, while law enforcement personnel intervened to disperse the crowd and restore order. To prevent any further outbreaks of retaliatory violence, additional police contingents have been deployed to the village.

Official Administrative Statements

Mizanur Rahman Bhuyan, the Additional Superintendent of Police in Sherpur, confirmed the details of the incident to the media. He stated that one individual had been killed in the factional clash and assured the public that the situation in Madarpur village had been brought completely under control.

The police administration further noted that efforts are underway to identify the individuals directly involved in the murder and the subsequent arson attack. Authorities have initiated a formal investigation, and legal action will be taken against those identified as responsible for the violence.
