Assault On Bus Driver Prompts Transport Strike In Naogaon

Four individuals, including a prominent leader of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD)—the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)—have been named in a criminal case registered at the Naogaon Sadar Model Police Station. The legal action follows a violent assault on a long-distance bus driver and the subsequent vandalism of a transport service ticket counter. The formal complaint, which was lodged on Tuesday afternoon, 19 May, also implicates a further seven to eight unidentified accomplices.

The primary informant and complainant in the case is Anwar Hossain Badal, the bus driver who sustained physical injuries during the confrontation. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the named defendants are Mohammad Sohag, a Joint Convenor of the Naogaon District JCD unit; Abdur Rauf, 36, Vice President of the District Prachar Dal; Ali Hasan Ontor; and Mohammad Rinku, 32.

Sequence of the Night-Time Confrontation

The formal police statement outlines that the disturbance initiated at approximately 01:00 am during the night of Monday, 18 May. The incident occurred directly outside the Ekta Paribahan transport counter situated within the Dhaka Bus Stand area of Naogaon town. The initial altercation began when an long-distance bus driven by Anwar Hossain Badal was performing a routine turning manoeuvre after discharging passengers, resulting in a minor collision with an unidentified three-wheeled autorickshaw.

Following this minor traffic encounter, a gathered crowd of local youths and external individuals coalesced to launch a coordinated physical assault on the driver. The attackers repeatedly struck the transport worker with slaps, punches, and blows. The formal statement notes that the named suspects subsequently escalated the violence by attempting to strike the driver on his head with wooden sticks and rods. Anwar Hossain Badal managed to evade the targeted blows by retreating quickly from the immediate perimeter of the vehicle.

The legal complaint further states that the group then turned their attention to the physical infrastructure of the transport network, entering the Ekta Paribahan ticket office. The perpetrators vandalised the internal property, destroying chairs and tables. The informant also alleged that the suspects forcibly removed 30,000 Bangladeshi Taka in cash from his shirt pocket during the commotion. As nearby transport staff and local members of the public converged on the spot to defuse the situation, the group retreated from the terminal premises after issuing verbal death threats to the remaining workers.

Transport Halts Across Multiple Districts

The repercussions of the assault manifested rapidly on Tuesday morning, 19 May. Expressing severe dissatisfaction over the lack of security and the physical abuse of their colleague, transport workers and members of the local Motor Transport Workers’ Union initiated an unannounced wildcat strike. Commencing at 09:30 am, all long-distance bus services departing from Naogaon towards major national hubs—including the capital city of Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, and Bogra—were completely suspended. Workers placed heavy transport vehicles across the main thoroughfares of the Dhaka Bus Stand area to act as physical blockades.

The abrupt suspension of regional transport links caused substantial disruption for hundreds of inter-district commuters, many of whom had booked tickets ahead of impending seasonal travel. Passengers arriving at the central bus terminals found ticket windows shuttered and departures frozen, forcing numerous individuals to seek alternative, more expensive transport, such as battery-powered three-wheelers, to travel four kilometres to the neighbouring Santahar railway junction in Bogra to continue their journeys.

Administrative Resolution and Police Actions

To resolve the gridlock, multiple rounds of closed-door discussions were convened throughout the day between senior law enforcement officials, executive members of the transport owners’ association, and regional workers’ union representatives. Abu Bakkar Siddique, the Convenor of the Naogaon Motor Workers’ Union and President of the District BNP, publicly affirmed that the union would not tolerate physical violence against transport workers, regardless of the political affiliations of the perpetrators.

Following explicit administrative and legal assurances that strict law enforcement measures would be executed against the named suspects, the transport strike was formally withdrawn after a duration of approximately eight hours. Long-distance transport operations resumed their standard schedules at 05:30 pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Confirming the formal initiation of the criminal inquiry, Mohammad Asaduzzaman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Naogaon Sadar Model Police Station, verified that the written complaint submitted by the injured bus driver had been processed into an active police case. The officer stated that dedicated police detachments had already been deployed across the municipal area, and law enforcement operations were actively underway to locate and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
