Violence Erupts After Youth Killing

A wave of violence has engulfed Noakhali’s Begumganj Upazila following the killing of a 23-year-old man, as enraged relatives and local residents allegedly attacked and set fire to several houses of those suspected to be involved in the incident.

The deceased, identified as Jubaer Hossain, also known as Rakib (23), was killed on Saturday night in the local Pra-Munshirhat area when he was reportedly assaulted with iron rods and sticks by a group of assailants. According to police and local sources, Rakib and his brother, Rimon, were returning home when they were attacked. Rakib sustained severe head and bodily injuries and was later declared dead after being taken to Noakhali General Hospital. His brother was also injured while attempting to intervene.

In the aftermath of the killing, tensions escalated sharply on Sunday morning. Around 11:00 a.m., a group comprising Rakib’s relatives and local residents allegedly launched attacks on at least eight houses belonging to suspected individuals in the Swarnapara area. The targeted properties reportedly included the homes of local residents identified as Montaz Member, Rafiq Ullah, Parveen Akhter, and Mamun. Witnesses and police sources stated that the attackers vandalised property, looted belongings, and set fire to multiple residential structures, including kitchens and living quarters.

Law enforcement officials from Begumganj Upazila confirmed that police rushed to the scene shortly after receiving reports of the unrest. With assistance from local residents, firefighters and police personnel brought the blaze under control. Additional police forces, including members of the district’s intelligence unit, were deployed to prevent further escalation. Authorities stated that the situation is now under control, although a heightened security presence remains in place.

Local residents, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggested that long-standing disputes between two community factions in the Khanpur village area may have contributed to the violence. They alleged that tensions between rival groups linked to local trade and personal conflicts had persisted for some time. It was further claimed that Rakib was caught in an altercation after attempting to mediate a dispute in the local market area, which may have triggered the fatal assault.

Police officials have confirmed that investigations are ongoing into both the murder and the subsequent attacks on property. Authorities have pledged legal action against those involved in vandalism, arson, and violence based on formal complaints and evidence collected from the scene.
