Bangladesh Women Secure Historic Under-18 Asia Cup Victory

The Bangladesh Under-18 women’s national hockey team secured their first victory in the ongoing Under-18 Asia Cup with a clinical performance in Japan on Monday. The team defeated Chinese Taipei by 2-0 goals in a highly competitive fixture, successfully bouncing back from a disappointing opening match where they suffered a heavy 12-0 defeat against the tournament hosts, Japan.

From the opening whistle, Bangladesh demonstrated significant tactical discipline, establishing control in the midfield. Their persistent attacking efforts yielded results in the 29th minute of the match when they earned a penalty corner. Kona Akter capitalised on the opportunity, converting the penalty corner with precision to give Bangladesh a crucial 1-0 lead. This solitary goal allowed the team to head into the half-time interval with a psychological advantage, whilst Chinese Taipei were left to re-strategise for the second half.

Following the resumption of play, Chinese Taipei launched successive waves of counter-attacks in an attempt to equalise. However, the Bangladesh defensive unit remained resilient, successfully neutralising all threats to maintain their clean sheet. As the match progressed into its final stages, Bangladesh intensified their offensive pressure to secure the fixture.

In the final ten minutes of the fourth quarter, a well-coordinated offensive manoeuvre saw Riya find the back of the net, doubling the lead to 2-0 and effectively guaranteeing the victory for Bangladesh. For her outstanding contributions and commanding performance throughout the match, Tonni was officially named the player of the match. Looking ahead, the Bangladesh women’s team is scheduled to face China in their next fixture on Tuesday.

Concurrently, the Bangladesh Under-18 men’s national hockey team is also participating in the tournament. The men’s team experienced a narrow 3-2 defeat against China on Sunday. Despite this setback, the boys had previously initiated their tournament campaign on a positive note by defeating Malaysia in their opening match.

The statistical breakdown of the tournament fixtures and results for both the Bangladesh men’s and women’s Under-18 teams is detailed in the table below:
