Twelve Fatalities Recorded Following Severe Nationwide Lightning Strikes

At least twelve individuals have been confirmed dead following a series of severe lightning strikes across six districts in Bangladesh. The fatal incidents occurred in separate locations throughout Thursday, 4 June 2026, stretching from the afternoon until the evening hours. Local authorities reported that the casualties were distributed across the districts of Chapainawabganj, Natore, Nilphamari, Panchagarh, Bogura, and Mymensingh, with victims predominantly engaged in outdoor agricultural or domestic activities during sudden inclement weather.

High Fatality Count Recorded in Chapainawabganj

The highest concentration of casualties occurred within Chapainawabganj district, where six individuals, including three women, lost their lives in the Sadar, Shibganj, and Nachole upazilas (sub-districts). The separate strikes occurred during heavy afternoon downpours.

According to the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shibganj Police Station, Motiur Rahman, three of the fatalities within his jurisdiction occurred while the individuals were gathering fallen mangoes in an orchard adjacent to their residences. The victims were instantly killed on the scene.

In Sadar upazila, the victim was struck while attempting to retrieve livestock from an open field during the storm. Local residents transported him to the general hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead. In Nachole upazila, one victim was struck while returning home after cutting grass, and another died whilst foraging for mangoes, as confirmed by Nachole Police Station OC Sukomal Chandra Debnath.

“Sudden convective storms during this season present extreme risks to individuals in open fields or under isolated trees. Public awareness regarding immediate shelter-seeking is critical to reducing these seasonal casualties,” noted a local disaster management official.
