A 30-year-old man, identified as Md. Jasim Uddin, who was reportedly subjected to assault in Feni, has died while undergoing treatment at Feni General Hospital. He died at approximately 3:45 am on Sunday (7 June), while receiving medical care.
The deceased was the son of the late Tomshir Ali from Ronkeli village under Golapganj upazila in Sylhet. According to police statements, he was mentally challenged.
As stated by police and hospital sources, the incident of assault allegedly took place in the vicinity of the Boro Masjid area in Feni town. On Saturday (6 June) at around 11:00 pm, several unidentified individuals transported Jasim Uddin to Feni General Hospital after rescuing him from the Boro Masjid area of the town.
He remained under treatment at the hospital until early Sunday morning, when he was declared dead while still admitted.
Rokon Uddoulla, Residential Medical Officer (RMO) of Feni General Hospital, confirmed the condition in which the patient was brought in and the subsequent outcome. He stated: “The identity of those who brought the individual to the hospital could not be established. There were signs of injury on his body. He died while under treatment.”
Following his death, the body was placed in the hospital morgue for necessary post-mortem procedures and further legal formalities.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Feni Model Police Station, Gazi Muhammad Fouzul Azim, confirmed that the identity of the deceased had already been verified by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). He further stated that an altercation and verbal dispute had taken place with Jasim Uddin in the Boro Masjid area of the town on Saturday night, during which he was assaulted. However, the incident was not described as mob beating. He also noted that the deceased was mentally challenged, according to available information.
