A shooting incident involving two gunmen in Toledo, Ohio, has left at least 12 people injured, according to local police. The violence occurred on Saturday near a popular community gathering linked to the city’s Old West End Festival, prompting a large-scale emergency response and an ongoing criminal investigation.
Authorities stated that the incident began when two armed individuals opened fire on each other in a crowded area. Police Lieutenant Dan Gerkens described the scene as one of the most severe he had ever attended in his career, highlighting the scale and intensity of the shooting.
Officials confirmed that the injured victims range in age from 14 to 61 years. Among them, two individuals remain in a critical condition, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals and medical facilities for urgent treatment.
The Toledo Police Department reported that officers were dispatched at approximately 5:37 pm local time after receiving reports of a person being shot near the Old West End Festival area. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered multiple victims and initiated immediate medical assistance and scene control measures.
Investigators are currently working to identify and locate the suspects involved in the exchange of gunfire. Deputy Police Chief Joseph Heffernan stated that the investigation remains active and that officers are pursuing several leads based on collected evidence. Authorities have not yet confirmed any arrests in connection with the incident.
In an effort to assist the investigation, the city’s Department of Public Safety Director, George Kral, urged members of the public to provide any mobile phone footage or eyewitness video that may help reconstruct the sequence of events. He noted that several hundred people were present in the area at the time of the shooting, given the festival setting.
Kral also expressed concern over the disruption caused to what is traditionally a well-attended and culturally significant local event. He described the incident as deeply unfortunate, emphasising that it overshadowed what was meant to be a community celebration.
Police have also confirmed that evidence has been collected from the scene and is currently undergoing forensic analysis. Further updates are expected as investigators continue to review surveillance material, witness statements, and digital recordings submitted by the public.
