Three Jailed in Drug Crackdown

A mobile court in Pakundia upazila of Kishoreganj district has sentenced three individuals to imprisonment and fines after they were apprehended on allegations of drug dealing in Charpalash village. The action followed a joint operation by the local administration and police, underscoring continued efforts to curb narcotics-related offences in the region.

According to official sources, the incident dates back to Monday evening (8 June), when a coordinated drive was conducted by Pakundia Upazila administration alongside Pakundia Police Station. During the operation, three men were detained on suspicion of involvement in illegal drug trade activities after reportedly being caught by members of the public in the area.

The mobile court was later conducted by the Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate, Rifaat Jahan, who oversaw proceedings under the relevant provisions of the Narcotics Control Act. Following preliminary hearings, the accused reportedly confessed to their involvement in the offences.

On Tuesday (9 June) at midday, the convicts were formally sent to prison following the court’s verdict. Each of them was sentenced to one year of simple imprisonment along with a fine of 100 taka.

Law enforcement officials stated that the operation was part of an ongoing drive to suppress the spread of illegal narcotics at the grassroots level. The police also confirmed that legal procedures were completed in accordance with mobile court regulations, ensuring swift judicial action in the field.

Details of the Convicted Individuals

Officials noted that mobile courts play a crucial role in ensuring immediate legal action in cases involving petty offences and narcotics-related crimes, particularly in rural areas where such activities can often go unchecked. They further emphasised that community cooperation, including timely reporting by local residents, remains essential in combating drug-related crimes effectively.

The administration has reiterated its commitment to continuing such drives in different parts of the upazila to maintain law and order and discourage the spread of illegal substances among the youth.
