Man Kills Mother for Siding With Elder Brother

A brutal murder driven by a domestic dispute has been uncovered in Singra Upazila of Natore district, where a man allegedly strangled his elderly mother to death and concealed her body. The victim, 75-year-old Mariam Begum, also known as Sharifa, was murdered by her second son, Jonab Ali (55), after she intervened in an argument and sided with her eldest son. The local police have since arrested Jonab Ali for the murder, along with his son, Al Amin (25), who assisted in concealing the corpse.

Background and Circumstances of the Crime

According to official police sources, the dispute originated on Saturday, 23 May, in Agpara Sherkol village, located within the Sherkol Union of Singra Upazila. An altercation broke out between the eldest brother, Shohidul Islam, and the second brother, Jonab Ali, regarding the excavation of a pit for a toilet on the boundary line of their residential property. During the dispute, their mother, Mariam Begum, intervened and supported Shohidul Islam, citing justifiable grounds.

Jonab Ali reacted resentfully to his mother’s intervention. On the night of 25 May, at approximately 21:00, driven by this lingering animosity, Jonab Ali strangled his mother to death.

Concealment and Disposal of the Body

Following the murder, Jonab Ali deposited his mother’s body into the newly dug toilet pit and sealed it with a concrete slab to hide the crime. The body remained inside the pit for ten days. By 4 June, the decomposing body began to emit a severe foul odour. To prevent detection, Jonab Ali extracted the corpse under the cover of darkness, placed it inside a sack, and discarded it into a nearby water hyacinth swamp. His son, Al Amin, actively assisted him in moving and dumping the sack.

Investigation and Apprehension

The victim’s daughter, Morjina Begum, filed a general diary (GD) regarding her missing mother at Singra Police Station on 6 June. Following the lead, the police launched an investigation and eventually recovered the missing woman’s wrapped body from the swamp on 9 June—15 days after her initial disappearance. The body was subsequently dispatched to the morgue for a post-mortem examination.

The discovery caused significant public outrage in the locality. Investigators brought the four sons of the deceased, alongside other relatives, to the police station for initial questioning. Under interrogation, the details of the crime were extracted. Police confirmed that while Jonab Ali acted alone during the actual murder, Al Amin was arrested for his direct involvement in disposing of the body.

Official Police Press Briefing

On Wednesday at 14:00, the Superintendent of Police (SP) for Natore District, Mohammad Shariful Haque, briefed media personnel regarding the case during a press conference held at the Singra Police Station premises.

Several senior officials were present at the briefing, including:

  • Nur Mohammad Ali, Additional Superintendent of Police (Singra Circle)

  • Rofiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Singra Police Station

  • Shofiqul Islam, Police Inspector (Investigation)

The Officer-in-Charge, Rofiqul Islam, confirmed that a formal murder case has been registered following a complaint lodged by the victim’s daughter, Morjina Begum. The two detained suspects remain in custody as legal proceedings move forward.
