A newborn infant abducted from Satkhira Sadar Upazila Health Complex in Sunamganj’s Chatak area has been safely recovered following a rapid, coordinated police operation involving two police stations. The baby was traced and rescued within hours of being taken on Thursday (11 June), bringing an end to an alarming incident that triggered widespread concern among hospital authorities and local administration.
According to hospital sources, the infant—a boy estimated to be around four to five days old—was first discovered on 8 June beside a road in Andharigaon under Sadar Union. The child was rescued by CNG auto-rickshaw driver Kausar Ahmed, who subsequently admitted the baby to Chatak Upazila Health Complex for medical care.
Later, the hospital authority formally transferred the infant to the Upazila Social Services Office for protection and care. During this period, as many as 13 individuals reportedly applied to adopt the child, reflecting significant public interest in legal guardianship.
However, on Thursday, Kausar Ahmed allegedly removed the newborn from the hospital without authorisation. Once the matter came to light, hospital officials, the Social Services Department, and police authorities launched an immediate investigation and rescue operation.
Police officials stated that intelligence inputs revealed Kausar Ahmed and his wife, Kalpana Begum, had taken the child to Shantiganj Upazila in Sunamganj. Acting on this information, a joint team led by the Officer-in-Charge of Chatak Police Station, Mizanur Rahman, carried out a coordinated operation with support from Shantiganj Police Station.
The team first detained Kausar Ahmed from a house in Badullahpur (Manikpur) village under West Pagla Union in Shantiganj. Based on his information, police later conducted another raid in the early hours of Friday at a house near Kaluraga Bazar Jame Mosque in Kaluraga Union of Chatak Upazila, where Kalpana Begum was found in possession of the newborn. The baby was successfully recovered unharmed.
After rescue, the infant was readmitted to Chatak Upazila Health Complex and is currently under the care of Rokshana Begum, wife of applicant Faisal Ahmed, pending formal adoption procedures.
