Qatar Secure Historical First World Cup Point

The Qatar national football team secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup point after a resilient performance culminated in a 1-1 draw against a statistically dominant Switzerland side in California. Despite recording a total of 26 shots—seven of which were on target—the Swiss team failed to convert their overwhelming possession into a victory, paying a heavy price for inefficient finishing in the final third. For Qatar, competing in only their second World Cup tournament, the draw marks a historic milestone following their disappointing debut campaign in 2022. During that tournament, as hosts, Qatar lost all three of their group stage matches and conceded seven goals, registering the worst performance by a host nation in World Cup history.

The match commenced with both sides creating scoring opportunities within the opening ten minutes, though neither managed to convert. The deadlock began to break in the 13th minute when a header from Breel Embolo sent the ball into the penalty area. Swiss midfielder Remo Freuler reacted quickest to the loose ball, but before he could capitalise, Qatari goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada committed a foul inside the box. The referee immediately awarded a penalty to Switzerland. In the 17th minute, Breel Embolo successfully converted the spot-kick, marking the first penalty goal of the tournament and establishing a 1-0 lead for Switzerland. Armed with the advantage, the Swiss team maintained their tactical dominance throughout the remainder of the first half.

Goal Scorers Breel Embolo (17′ P) Boualem Khoukhi (94′)
Group B Points Awarded 1 1

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Switzerland launching consecutive attacks that were repeatedly thwarted by an organized Qatari defence and precise goalkeeping. Qatar restricted their offensive efforts primarily to counter-attacks, managing only seven shots throughout the entire duration of the fixture.

Switzerland appeared poised to secure the three points as the match entered its final moments. However, in the fourth minute of stoppage time (94th minute), Qatar executed a decisive attack. A well-placed cross delivered from the left flank found the Qatari captain, Boualem Khoukhi, who directed a powerful header past the Swiss goalkeeper to equalise.

This late intervention altered the standings in Group B. In the opening match of the group, co-hosts Canada played out a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Consequently, following the conclusion of the initial round of fixtures, all four teams in Group B remain entirely level, with each nation holding exactly one point and an identical goal difference.
