Three Dead in Narayanganj Gas Cylinder Explosion

Three members of the same family have succumbed to severe burn injuries following a domestic gas explosion caused by a leakage in the Bandar Upazila of Narayanganj. The deceased were laid to rest on Tuesday morning in their ancestral family graveyard located in Daldala village, within the Jaria Union of Purbadhala Upazila, Netrokona. Meanwhile, the sole surviving member of the immediate family, a 13-year-old girl named Mim Akter, remains in a critical condition under intensive care at a specialized medical facility in Dhaka.

Incident Background and Cause of Explosion

According to local residents and relatives, the family patriarch, Abdul Mannan, worked as a vegetable vendor and resided with his family in a rented house in the Chanpur area of Madanpur Union, situated under the Bandar Upazila of Narayanganj.

The catastrophic incident transpired in the early hours of 11 June. Institutional sources indicate that liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) had leaked from a cylinder overnight, accumulating silently within the enclosed rooms of the residence. At dawn, when Abdul Mannan’s wife, Sultana Begum, attempted to light the kitchen stove, the spark triggered a massive explosion. The force of the blast and the subsequent fire caused catastrophic burn injuries to all family members inside the house, as well as a neighbouring child who was in close proximity.

Medical Reports and Casualty Details

Following the explosion, the victims were urgently transported to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, where they were admitted directly to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Despite extensive medical intervention, three of the victims passed away between 12 June and 15 June.

Dr Shawn Bin Rahman, an Assistant Professor and the Resident Surgeon at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, provided precise details regarding the extent of the injuries and the timeline of the fatalities.

The clinical data concerning the casualties and survivors are detailed in the table below:

Name of the Individual Relationship / Status Extent of Burns Clinical Outcome / Current Status
Sultana Begum Mother / Wife 90% of body surface area Deceased; passed away on 12 June
Abdul Mannan Father / Husband 35% of body surface area Deceased; passed away on Monday dawn (15 June)
Siam Son 77% of body surface area Deceased; passed away on Monday at 10:00 BST (15 June)
Mim Akter (13) Daughter 41% (including respiratory tract) Alive; currently in the ICU in a critical condition
Hazrat Ali Neighbouring Child Unspecified severe burns Alive; currently undergoing hospital treatment

Repatriation, Janazah, and Burial

The bodies of the three deceased family members were officially released by the hospital authorities following the completion of legal and medical formalities. The remains arrived at their village home in Purbadhala Upazila on Monday night, drawing a large gathering of grieving relatives and local villagers.

On Tuesday at 09:00 BST, a collective funeral prayer (Janazah) was held in the village. Following the prayers, the bodies of Abdul Mannan, his wife Sultana Begum, and their son Siam were buried side by side in the family graveyard.

Current Medical Prognosis

Dr Shawn Bin Rahman further clarified that the condition of 13-year-old Mim Akter remains highly critical. The 41 per cent burns she sustained have severely compromised her inhalation and respiratory tract, requiring continuous life-support measures in the Intensive Care Unit. The medical team has stated that she is not yet out of danger. Furthermore, treatment is ongoing for the injured neighbour, Hazrat Ali, who remains hospitalized under close clinical observation.
