Cat Theft Syndicate Dismantled in Vietnam

A coordinated police operation in Vietnam has uncovered an organised cat theft syndicate, resulting in the rescue of more than 400 live cats and the arrest of nine individuals in Ho Chi Minh City. Authorities also seized additional animal remains preserved in ice, alongside further live animals recovered from a separate location.

According to police and local media reports, officers conducted simultaneous raids on multiple concealed sites across southern Vietnam, including areas in Tay Ninh Province and Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday, 11 June. The coordinated operation led to the dismantling of a network that had allegedly been operating for approximately three years.

Investigators stated that the arrested individuals admitted to trapping and stealing domestic cats from residential neighbourhoods. The animals were reportedly collected at regular intervals, typically every two to three days, before being sold to meat traders. Police also confirmed that the syndicate had developed a structured system for storage and distribution.

In addition to the rescued live animals, authorities confiscated around 80 deceased cats stored in frozen conditions, as well as a further 21 live cats recovered from a separate holding facility. Animal welfare organisations have since become involved in the recovery and identification process.

The international animal welfare organisation Humane World for Animals reported that at least 40 of the rescued cats have already been reunited with their owners. However, it also noted that several animals died after rescue due to prolonged neglect and poor conditions while in captivity.

Under Vietnamese law, the consumption of dog and cat meat is not explicitly prohibited. However, traders are required to provide documentation proving the lawful origin of animals being sold. Authorities emphasised that violations related to sourcing, transport, and trade can still result in legal consequences.

Animal welfare groups estimate that significant numbers of cats and dogs are illegally captured and traded annually within the country, although exact figures vary across sources. The issue has increasingly drawn public attention, particularly among younger citizens and pet owners who have voiced opposition to the trade.

Police have confirmed that investigations remain ongoing to identify additional members of the network and any associated supply chains. Residents who have recently lost pet cats have been urged to contact authorities to assist with identification of recovered animals.
