Police responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the hospital campus in Wilmington. According to Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos, officers arrived at the scene shortly after the alert and located two individuals who had been struck by gunfire. One of the victims was pronounced dead, while the other sustained injuries. Officials did not immediately release further information regarding the condition of the injured person.

The suspect’s identity has not been publicly detailed beyond confirmation of his age. Brian Pfeffer, a patient advocate present in the emergency department at the time, reported hearing two shots that sounded similar to firecrackers. He stated that he subsequently fled the building as the situation unfolded.

The incident prompted strong reactions from local and state officials. Wilmington Mayor John Carney described the shooting as an act of senseless violence. Delaware Governor Matt Meyer characterised the event as a stark reminder of ongoing security challenges, stating that the destructive impact of gun violence can affect public spaces that are generally considered safe.
