Wilmington Hospital Shooting Probe

A shooting at a hospital in the US state of Delaware resulted in one fatality and one person being injured, prompting a police investigation and the arrest of a 23-year-old suspect in Philadelphia on Tuesday night (16 June). Authorities are currently arranging his transfer back to Delaware as the inquiry continues.

Police responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the hospital campus in Wilmington. According to Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos, officers arrived at the scene shortly after the alert and located two individuals who had been struck by gunfire. One of the victims was pronounced dead, while the other sustained injuries. Officials did not immediately release further information regarding the condition of the injured person.

The suspect’s identity has not been publicly detailed beyond confirmation of his age. Investigators have not yet determined whether the alleged attacker was employed by the hospital or had any prior connection to the facility. Law enforcement officials stated that these aspects remain under active investigation.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is assisting local authorities in the case, working alongside Wilmington police to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.

Eyewitness accounts described immediate panic inside the hospital following the gunfire. Brian Pfeffer, a patient advocate present in the emergency department at the time, reported hearing two shots that sounded similar to firecrackers. He stated that he subsequently fled the building as the situation unfolded.

The incident prompted strong reactions from local and state officials. Wilmington Mayor John Carney described the shooting as an act of senseless violence. Delaware Governor Matt Meyer characterised the event as a stark reminder of ongoing security challenges, stating that the destructive impact of gun violence can affect public spaces that are generally considered safe.

Members of the US Senate representing Delaware also expressed condolences. Senator Chris Coons and Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester both issued statements expressing sorrow over the incident and extending sympathy to the families of those affected.

Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive for the shooting. Investigations remain ongoing, with law enforcement agencies continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
