Gazipur Factory Workers Fall

More than one hundred workers became ill after drinking supplied water at a garment manufacturing factory in Chandora area under Kaliakair Upazila of Gazipur. The incident occurred on Thursday morning at a factory named Dressman Limited. Affected workers have been admitted to Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex as well as various other hospitals and private clinics.

According to workers and factory sources, employees drank water provided by the factory after starting work in the morning. Shortly afterwards, many of them began to experience symptoms including vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, weakness, and shortness of breath. As the number of affected individuals increased rapidly, panic spread throughout the factory premises. Factory authorities then arranged for the ill workers to be transported for medical treatment.

Several affected workers alleged that the supplied water had an unpleasant odour. They stated that they felt unwell shortly after consuming it, and the number of sick workers gradually rose to over one hundred.

However, the administration of Dressman Limited provided a different account. The Assistant General Manager (Administration), Atikul Islam, stated that so far 40 to 50 workers had fallen ill. He added that medical treatment was arranged immediately after the situation came to light. He further suggested that following continuous “rape” on Monday, waterlogging occurred in the surrounding area, and workers drank tap water that had become contaminated due to flooding conditions. The factory management, however, claimed that no issues were found with the factory’s water supply system.

Police also responded to the incident. The Officer-in-Charge of Kaliakair Police Station, Shahidul Islam, stated that police were sent to the scene after reports of workers falling ill from drinking water. He confirmed that arrangements were made for medical treatment and noted that doctors had indicated the affected workers were not in critical condition.
