Rising Job Opportunities for Bangladeshi Workers in Portugal

Portugal is rapidly gaining prominence as a preferred European destination for Bangladeshi nationals seeking overseas employment. Faced with an escalating labour shortage, the country has opened various sectors to international recruitment, unlocking fresh potential for skilled Bangladeshi professionals. Industry experts highlight that the highest demand currently exists in construction, agriculture, hospitality, transport, and manufacturing. Concurrently, opportunities are emerging in high-skilled fields, including information technology and engineering.

A combination of persistent domestic labour deficits, steady economic growth, and supportive government policies has transformed Portugal into an appealing hub for global workers. However, migration specialists advise that capitalising on these openings requires verified professional skills, language proficiency, and meticulous preparation through legal immigration channels.

For Bangladeshi expatriate students already residing in Portugal, securing employment with reputable global firms generally follows two pathways. The primary method involves obtaining a certificate of equivalence to validate Bangladeshi educational credentials against the Portuguese academic system. To pursue this, applicants must hold a valid residence permit, as European firms strictly verify legal working rights before conducting interviews.

The equivalence process is governed by Decree-Law No. 238/83, which enables both citizens and legal foreign residents to seek local recognition for overseas degrees. This online service, managed primarily by the University of Lisbon, caters to undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral qualifications. Applicants must first have their academic certificates translated into Portuguese by an authorised lawyer and officially notarised. Subsequently, the documents must be verified by the Bangladeshi Embassy in Portugal and authenticated by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Processing applications requires non-refundable fees of 600 Euros for doctorates, 550 Euros for master’s degrees, and 500 Euros for bachelor’s degrees.

Securing a formal job offer from a registered employer in Portugal remains a prerequisite for initiating the work visa application. The employer typically handles the initial work permit application with domestic authorities. Prospective employees must compile a comprehensive dossier, including a valid passport, an employment contract, authenticated educational certificates, proof of professional experience, a police clearance certificate, and an updated curriculum vitae. Medical examinations and proof of accommodation are occasionally requested. While basic English is sufficient for initial communication, familiarity with the Portuguese language significantly improves employment prospects and workplace integration.

The prevailing wage structure varies noticeably by skill level. Unskilled or general labourers can expect a monthly income ranging between 900 and 1,000 Euros. Conversely, skilled professionals earn between 1,200 and 3,000 Euros, or more, depending on their technical expertise.

Amidst these opportunities, migration experts warn of significant fraudulent risks. Many job seekers face financial losses by relying on unauthorised middlemen or deceptive agencies. Consequently, candidates are strongly urged to apply directly through official corporate websites or trusted employment portals. Recent adjustments to Portuguese immigration policies have limited the availability of traditional job-seeker visas, increasing the necessity of securing an employment contract prior to relocating.

Afzal Uddin, a Bangladeshi student who moved to Portugal to pursue a master’s degree at the Nova University Lisbon, shared his journey. He recalled that the initial phase was exceptionally challenging, but conditions improved as he adapted to the environment. Supported by university peers, he refurbished his professional profile on LinkedIn and began his job hunt. Despite facing multiple rejections during interviews, he persevered. He now balances his postgraduate studies with a position as an accountant at a private firm, proving that proper qualifications and adherence to legal procedures can pave the way for long-term career success in Portugal.
