Promising Young Cricketer Battles Acute Blood Cancer

A promising youth cricketer from Bangladesh, Mehedi Hasan Hriday, is currently undergoing treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), a highly aggressive form of blood cancer, at the National Cancer Institute and Hospital in Dhaka. The diagnosis has placed the under-18 pace bowler in a life-threatening battle that has abruptly interrupted a career many once saw as full of potential.

Medical specialists identified AML after a series of prolonged tests across multiple hospitals failed to initially confirm the exact nature of his illness. His samples were later sent to India for further analysis, which finally confirmed the high-risk condition. AML is known for its rapid progression and often requires intensive chemotherapy, extended hospital care, and in some cases bone marrow transplantation. Treatment is not only complex but also financially demanding, placing immense strain on affected families.

Hriday, a resident of Feni, had been progressing steadily through Bangladesh cricket’s age-group system despite significant personal and financial hardship. He earned his place in the Chattogram Division Under-18 side through Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) trials, where his performances quickly drew attention. Working under coach Rana Habib, the young pacer demonstrated raw pace and discipline, eventually making an impact at the divisional level. One of his standout performances came against Khulna, where he claimed five wickets in a single match, underlining his ability to compete at a higher level.

Those who have followed his development believe he possessed the attributes required to progress further in Bangladesh’s competitive cricket structure. His consistency and natural talent were often highlighted as signs of a player who could, with proper development and support, become a significant contributor to the national cricket pipeline.

However, his sporting journey came to an abrupt halt when his illness worsened. According to family members, Hriday’s father, Abul Kashem, has been suffering from serious heart disease and has been unable to work for an extended period. The family’s financial condition deteriorated further as medical expenses mounted. In recent months, they were forced to sell land and exhaust their savings to continue his treatment.

The ongoing chemotherapy has added further strain, with doctors indicating that long-term care will be necessary. The cost of treatment has now far exceeded the family’s means, leaving them dependent on external support.

Film director Mahfuz Nazim Mapel, who is coordinating efforts related to Hriday’s treatment, described him as an exceptional young talent whose potential stood out among many players of his age group. He stressed that the young cricketer is now engaged in what may be the most difficult struggle of his life, urging collective support from the cricketing community and beyond.

Hriday’s family and well-wishers have appealed to the Bangladesh Cricket Board, sports organisations, former and current cricketers, and members of the public to extend financial assistance. They have also stated that all relevant medical documents and reports can be provided upon request to verify his condition and treatment needs.

As Hriday continues his treatment, his story has become a stark reminder of how fragile sporting dreams can be when confronted with severe illness, and how urgently collective support can make a difference in moments of crisis.
