Former Student Leader Dies After Fall From Poultry Farm Roof

A former local leader of Bangladesh’s banned student organisation Chhatra League has died after falling from the tin roof of a poultry farm while carrying out repair work in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh district.

The deceased, Zakir Hossain, 32, was a resident of Purura village under Bharadoba Union and the son of Abu Sayed. He previously served as president of the Bharadoba Union unit of the banned Chhatra League.

According to local residents and family members, the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when Zakir climbed onto the tin roof of a poultry farm in his village to repair an electric fan. During the work, he reportedly lost his footing and slipped from the roof, falling heavily to the ground.

Witnesses said the fall resulted in a severe head injury. Blood was seen coming from his ear, an indication of the seriousness of the trauma. Family members and local people rushed to his aid before taking him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment.

Doctors initially treated him there, but as his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for specialised care. Despite efforts by medical staff, Zakir succumbed to his injuries later that evening while undergoing treatment. He was pronounced dead at around 8:00pm.

His maternal uncle, Ashfak Al Mamun, confirmed the sequence of events. He said Zakir had gone onto the roof of the poultry farm to repair a fan when he accidentally slipped and fell. After sustaining a serious head injury, he was first taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to the severity of his condition. He died there while receiving treatment.

The incident has cast a shadow over the local community, where Zakir was known to many residents. News of his death spread quickly through the area, prompting expressions of grief from neighbours and acquaintances.

Falls from rooftops and elevated structures remain a significant cause of accidental injuries in rural and semi-urban areas of Bangladesh, particularly when repair or maintenance work is carried out without specialised safety equipment. Tin-roofed structures, commonly used for agricultural facilities such as poultry and livestock farms, can become especially hazardous due to their smooth surfaces and steep angles.

Although such work is often undertaken by property owners or local workers without formal safety measures, accidents can result in serious injuries, particularly when falls involve head trauma. Medical experts frequently stress the importance of using protective equipment and exercising caution during maintenance work at height.

Authorities have not indicated any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident, and the death appears to have resulted from an accidental fall.

Zakir Hossain’s death has left his family mourning the sudden loss of a loved one whose life was cut short in a tragic accident while carrying out routine repair work. His relatives and neighbours continue to come to terms with the loss as the community reflects on the dangers associated with working on elevated structures without adequate safety precautions.
