Bangladeshi Opposition Official Arrested After Staging Intoxicated Police Station Raid

A local political figure in Khulna has been arrested alongside his associate after entering a police station whilst heavily intoxicated to demand the release of two detained drug users. The dramatic incident, which unfolded late on Saturday night at the Sonadanga Model Police Station, led to the immediate expulsion of the official from his political party on charges of violating organisational discipline.

The primary suspect, identified as Mohammad Mostafa Shekh Dulal, served as the general secretary of the Ward 18 unit of the Sramik Dal—the labour wing of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). His arrested associate has been identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam. Following their unruly behaviour and subsequent detention, both men were transferred under police custody to the prison cell of Khulna Medical College Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.

Midnight Raid and Threat of Dismissal

According to detailed accounts provided by the Sonadanga police, the chain of events began around 12:15 am during a routine anti-narcotics operation in the city. Officers caught two individuals, identified as Mohammad Parvez Shekh and Mohammad Abdullah, red-handed whilst they were consuming illegal drugs. The police promptly arrested the duo and transported them to the Sonadanga station house for processing.

The situation escalated dramatically roughly half an hour later. At approximately 12:45 am, Dulal, Islam, and two to three unidentified accomplices arrived at the police station. Duty officers observed that the political leader and his companions were visibly under the influence of alcohol. When the group aggressively attempted to bypass security to meet the two drug suspects, the police personnel on duty blocked their path.

Refusing to back down, Dulal confronted Assistant Sub-Inspector Nadim Mahmud, demanding the immediate release of the two detainees. When the officer flatly refused to comply with the unlawful demand, Dulal and Islam reportedly lost control. They began using highly offensive language and hurled obscenities at the station staff, threatening to have the on-duty police officers dismissed from their jobs by exploiting their political influence. Recognizing the direct threat to public order, the police moved swiftly to place both Dulal and Islam under arrest.

Political Fallout and Absolute Zero Tolerance

The official confirmation of the incident was delivered by Rafiqul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sonadanga Police Station. He confirmed that the men were highly intoxicated upon arrival and attempted to wield undue political influence over law enforcement officials. The clinical confirmation of their erratic, alcohol-induced state necessitated their transfer to the local medical college hospital’s prison ward under armed guard.

The political repercussions for the Sramik Dal leader were swift and severe. By Sunday afternoon, the Khulna metropolitan branch of the Sramik Dal issued an official statement signed by its metropolitan general secretary, Mohammad Shariful Islam Tipu. The leadership announced that Dulal had been stripped of his primary membership and permanently expelled from the organisation due to definitive proof of his involvement in activities that breach party discipline.
