A formal complaint has been lodged in Kushtia against six individuals, including prominent media personalities and entertainers, over allegations of making derogatory and contemptuous remarks regarding the July movement. The case has drawn attention due to the high-profile nature of those named and the politically sensitive backdrop of the allegations.
On Sunday (5 July), SM Suyet, a central member of the National Citizen Party (NCP), submitted the written complaint to the Islamic University Police Station in Kushtia. The accused include actress Meher Afroz Shaon, film actress Mahia Mahi, journalist Anis Alomgir, Shanta Farzana, Soma Islam, and Momin Mehedi.
According to the complaint, the July movement is regarded by its supporters as a significant chapter in the country’s recent political history, during which large-scale casualties and injuries were reported. The document claims that approximately 1,400 people were killed and more than 30,000 injured during the unrest, which is described by proponents as a defining political uprising.
The complaint further alleges that in recent times, several individuals have publicly criticised and mocked the movement, its commemorative symbols, and those involved. It specifically mentions claims that Shanta Farzana desecrated a July memorial by throwing a shoe at it. Actress Shaon is accused of posting on Facebook describing the movement as a staged event and making additional disparaging remarks on social media platforms. Journalist Anis Alomgir, along with Soma Islam and Momin Mehedi, are also accused of repeatedly making dismissive comments about the movement in various public forums.
The complainant has requested a thorough investigation into these incidents and urged authorities to take legal action against those found responsible. The complaint argues that such statements and actions amount to disrespect towards a historically significant and emotionally charged political event.
Speaking to reporters, SM Suyet stated that recent incidents involving alleged insults to the July movement and its memorial structures are deeply concerning. He further claimed that individuals attempting to “legitimise opposing narratives” and those defending such remarks should face swift legal consequences under the law.
Islamic University Police Station Officer-in-Charge Masud Rana confirmed receipt of the written complaint. He stated that a formal investigation will be conducted into the allegations made against the six individuals before any further steps are taken.
