Israeli Defence Minister Threatens to Assassinate Top Iranian Leaders

In a move that has significantly escalated geopolitical tensions across the Middle East, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has issued an explicit assassination warning to Iran’s political and military leadership. Katz claimed that the late Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was targeted and killed because he was orchestrating a comprehensive plan to completely destroy the State of Israel. He warned that any future Iranian leader attempting to follow a similar path would inevitably suffer the exact same fate.

According to a report broadcast by Israel’s Channel 13 television network on Monday, 6 July, Katz made these highly controversial and provocative remarks whilst the state funeral procession for Khamenei was actively underway in Tehran. The timing of the statement underscored the deep hostility between the two regional rivals. Katz further emphasised that the Israeli military remains completely prepared to defend its sovereignty and citizens against any imminent threats from adversaries at any given moment.

This is not the first instance where the Israeli defence chief has publicly singled out prominent figures within the Iranian establishment. Katz previously identified Khamenei’s influential son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as being on Tel Aviv’s active hit list for targeted assassination. That earlier declaration provoked intense fury within diplomatic and political circles in Tehran, prompting formal international protests from the Islamic Republic.

The response from Tehran to these latest comments was swift and uncompromising. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi counter-attacked by placing the responsibility directly on the United States. Araghchi stated that it is the fundamental duty of US President Donald Trump to restrain and control the aggressive actions of the administration in Tel Aviv. The foreign minister issued a stern warning that any direct or indirect threat aimed at the Iranian populace or the state leadership would met with an immediate, precise, and severe military response.

Geopolitical analysts observe that this open war of words, combined with the shifting power dynamics in Tehran following the late leader’s demise, has pushed regional security into an uncharted and perilous phase. The focus now turns to whether Washington can successfully defuse the situation.
