A young woman died after reportedly jumping beneath a moving passenger train in Faridpur’s Bhanga upazila on Tuesday morning, prompting an investigation by local police into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The deceased was identified as 20-year-old Fatema Begum, a resident of Babnatala village in Chumurdi Union under Bhanga upazila. Although originally from the area, she had been living in a rented house in the Kapuria Sadardi locality of Bhanga municipality.
According to local residents, the incident occurred on Tuesday morning, 7 July, in the Kapuria Sadardi area. They said Fatema Begum allegedly jumped in front of the Khulna-to-Dhaka Jahannabad Express as it was passing through the area. The impact proved fatal, and she died at the scene before any medical assistance could be provided.
After receiving information about the incident, personnel from Bhanga Police Station and the Fire Service quickly arrived at the location. Rescue workers recovered the body, which was later taken into police custody in accordance with legal procedures. Authorities are expected to complete the necessary formalities before handing the body over to her family.
Police have not yet established the reason behind the incident. Officers said no immediate evidence had been found to explain why the young woman reportedly took such a step, and they are continuing to investigate all possible circumstances surrounding her death.
Officer-in-Charge Md Mizanur Rahman of Bhanga Police Station confirmed that the body had been recovered from the scene. He said the exact reason why Fatema Begum jumped beneath the train remains unknown at this stage, and investigators are working to determine what led to the tragedy.
Fatal railway incidents often require police to examine witness accounts, physical evidence and the personal circumstances of the deceased before reaching any conclusion. Officials have urged the public not to speculate about the cause until the investigation is complete.
The incident has left residents of the local community shocked, with many expressing grief over the untimely death of the young woman. Police said further information would be released if new findings emerge during the course of the investigation.
