A twenty-five-year-old private university student has succumbed to his injuries following a violent clash between two local factions over a long-standing dispute in Tongi, Gazipur. The victim, Monzurul Islam—popularly known as Hasib—passed away during the early hours of Thursday, 9 July, whilst undergoing emergency treatment at a private hospital in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. Law enforcement officials have detained one individual in connection with the fatal altercation.
Monzurul Islam, a resident of the Pagar neighbourhood in Tongi, was the son of Tariqul Islam and an active student at Green University. The initial confrontation erupted on Wednesday night in the Pagar area under the jurisdiction of the Tongi East Police Station, leaving four people severely injured. Aside from the deceased student, two other local youths, identified as twenty-five-year-old Md Akash and twenty-four-year-old Imran Hasan, remain hospitalised with serious wounds. Meanwhile, the police have taken forty-five-year-old Zobayer Hossain, another resident of Pagar, into custody for his alleged involvement in the violence.
According to local sources and police investigators, the bloodshed was the direct result of a simmering feud between Monzurul’s father and a neighbouring faction. The historical animosity reached a boiling point on Wednesday evening when a heated argument quickly turned physical, drawing in multiple individuals from both sides. Weapons were reportedly used during the ensuing melee, which left four participants bleeding on the street before the local community could intervene.
The casualties were initially rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) as their conditions were deemed critical by first responders. Due to a rapid deterioration in his vital signs, Monzurul was moved to multiple specialized medical centres before being admitted to the intensive care unit of the Dhanmondi facility, where he ultimately died.
Tongi East Police Station has deployed additional personnel to the Pagar area to prevent any retaliatory attacks between the grieving families and the opposing faction. Officers are currently reviewing local testimonies and interviewing witnesses to map out the exact sequence of events that led to the escalation.
Operational Directive: Detectives are conducting targeted raids across Gazipur to apprehend other suspects who fled the scene immediately after the clash.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tongi East Police Station, Mehedi Hasan, confirmed that a comprehensive investigation into the murder is actively underway. “We are thoroughly examining the root cause of this tragic incident,” the Officer-in-Charge stated. “Legal proceedings are currently being processed, and we have already secured the detention of one suspect. Anyone found guilty of instigating or participating in this violence will face the full force of the law.”
The body of the university student has been scheduled for a post-mortem examination to officially document the cause of death, after which it will be handed over to his family for burial. Local community leaders have expressed deep shock over the loss of a young academic life to a territorial neighbourhood dispute.
