At least two people have been killed and four others seriously injured after gunfire erupted during one of Toronto’s best-known summer street festivals, prompting a major police investigation and renewed concern over public safety at large outdoor events.
The shooting took place on Saturday, 11 July, during the annual Salsa on St. Clair festival in midtown Toronto. The event, which celebrates Latin culture through music, dance, food and live performances, attracts thousands of visitors each year and is regarded as one of the city’s most popular community festivals.
According to Toronto Police, officers responding to reports of gunfire discovered six people suffering from gunshot wounds. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining four were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, pending notification of their families.
Deputy Chief Frank Barredo said investigators do not believe the incident involved a lone gunman. Instead, preliminary evidence indicates that multiple individuals exchanged gunfire, although the exact number of suspects remains unclear.
Police have recovered two firearms from the area and established three separate crime scenes as investigators work to reconstruct the sequence of events. Officials have not confirmed how many rounds were fired or what triggered the violence. No arrests had been made at the time of the latest update, and detectives continue to examine forensic evidence, review surveillance footage and speak with witnesses.
The festival was attended by an estimated 13,000 people when the shooting occurred. The sudden outbreak of violence caused panic among festival-goers, with many fleeing the area as emergency responders rushed to the scene. Police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or captured photographs or video recordings to come forward and assist the investigation.
The annual Salsa on St. Clair festival is widely recognised as a celebration of Toronto’s multicultural identity, drawing residents and visitors from across the Greater Toronto Area. The incident has cast a shadow over an event traditionally associated with music, family entertainment and cultural exchange.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed his condolences in a message posted on the social media platform X, describing the shooting as a senseless act of violence. He said he was deeply saddened by the loss of life and pledged that those responsible would be identified, arrested and brought before the courts.
Investigators have not yet determined whether the shooting was targeted or random. Police say the investigation remains active and that additional information will be released as more evidence becomes available.
