Dutch Referee Rob Dieperink Dies Aged Thirty-Eight

Dutch football referee Rob Dieperink has passed away at the age of 38. The official, who was originally included on FIFA’s list to serve as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the ongoing World Cup, was removed from the tournament line-up two months ago following a police investigation. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) confirmed the news of his death, though the exact cause of his passing remains undisclosed at this stage.

In April, Dieperink was arrested by metropolitan police in the United States after a teenager accused him of sexual harassment. The case did not progress further due to a lack of sufficient evidence. Despite the lack of formal charges, FIFA took the pre-emptive measure of removing his name from the prestigious World Cup match officials list in May whilst the wider implications of the investigation were being evaluated.

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) released a statement expressing profound grief over Dieperink’s sudden demise. The governing body paid tribute to him, stating that Dutch football had lost not only a highly skilled referee but also a warm and deeply dedicated colleague. The KNVB extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and close associates during this incredibly difficult period.

Following his exclusion from the World Cup, Dieperink gave an interview to a Dutch media outlet in which he vehemently denied the allegations. He maintained that the claims made against him were entirely false and asserted that he had cooperated fully with law enforcement from the very beginning of the inquiry. He also stressed that he had been completely transparent with FIFA, UEFA, and the KNVB throughout the process, admitting that missing out on the World Cup was a devastating blow to his career.

Dieperink had been a consistent and respected figure in Dutch domestic football, officiating in the Eredivisie since 2017. His career had been on a steady upward trajectory, culminating in high-profile international appointments. He previously served as a match official at both the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, demonstrating his pedigree on the global stage before his career was tragically cut short.
