The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has reported the death of one patient from confirmed measles, whilst another six individuals have died after presenting with severe symptoms of the disease in the last twenty-four hours. According to the official health bulletin released on Tuesday, 14 July, an additional 122 laboratory-confirmed measles cases were detected during the daily reporting period ending at eight o’clock on Monday morning. This latest spike highlights the persistent threat of the highly contagious viral infection across the country.
Epidemiological data compiled by the health authorities shows that since the current outbreak began on 15 March, Bangladesh has recorded 95 confirmed measles deaths. In addition, 671 individuals have lost their lives whilst suffering from suspected measles symptoms, bringing the cumulative toll associated with the outbreak to 766 deaths. Health experts have expressed concern over the rate of transmission, urging parents to ensure their children are fully immunised.
The geographic spread of the fatalities shows a heavy concentration in the central region, with Dhaka division recording the highest number of suspected measles deaths at 291. Sylhet division follows with 93 deaths, whilst Rajshahi recorded 89. Other regional figures include 63 deaths in Mymensingh, 54 in Chittagong, 43 in Barisal, 29 in Khulna, and nine in Rangpur division.
Hospital resources are facing considerable pressure as a further 868 patients arrived at various healthcare facilities presenting with symptoms of the disease during the last twenty-four hours. Of these, 831 patients required admission. Dhaka division recorded the highest number of new hospitalisations with 319 patients, followed by Chittagong with 195 admissions. Other admissions included 128 in Barisal, 54 in Sylhet, 53 in Mymensingh, 47 in Khulna, 24 in Rajshahi, and 11 in Rangpur.
Cumulatively, the total number of hospitalised patients since the onset of the outbreak has risen to 96,027. Encouragingly, 92,383 of these individuals have recovered and have been discharged. Currently, the national tally of suspected measles cases stands at 113,244, with 13,735 cases officially confirmed through laboratory testing.
