Sixty-Two Arrested in Massive Dhaka Metropolitan Police Crackdown

Officers from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have detained 62 individuals during an extensive crime-prevention drive across six police stations under the Tejgaon division. A formal press statement issued by the DMP on Tuesday confirmed the arrests, detailing a targeted effort to curb mugging, narcotics distribution, and local lawlessness in high-risk urban sectors. One minor involved in conflict with the law was also taken into protective custody during the coordinated operations.

The targeted sweeps spanned several key precincts within the capital, resulting in a breakdown of arrests across multiple station jurisdictions. Mohammadpur Police Station recorded the highest number of detentions, with 15 suspects taken into custody. Police officers stationed at Hatirjheel apprehended 12 individuals, whilst the Tejgaon Industrial Area division detained 10 suspects. Meanwhile, operations under both Tejgaon and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police stations led to 9 arrests each, and Adabor Police Station reported 7 detentions.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that formal legal proceedings have been initiated against all the detainees, who face charges ranging from active arrest warrants to drug trafficking, robbery, and street-level extortion. Police personnel conducted raids across key transit hubs, residential alleys, and known crime hotspots, relying on real-time intelligence to track down individuals suspected of disrupting public order. The minor brought into protective custody will be processed in accordance with juvenile justice protocols, ensuring legal representation and child protection measures are upheld throughout the legal procedures.

The Tejgaon division, known for housing dense residential zones, commercial hubs, and crucial transport arteries, has faced mounting pressure to address recurring street crimes, particularly snatching and illegal substance distribution. In response, metropolitan authorities have intensified night-time patrolling, established strategic checkpoints, and increased plainclothes surveillance to reassure local residents and deter criminal syndicates operating across central Dhaka. Local community leaders have frequently raised concerns about public safety near bus terminals, overpasses, and secluded alleys, prompting police command to deploy additional personnel during peak hours.

Senior metropolitan police officers emphasised that these targeted law enforcement drives form part of a broader, city-wide operational strategy aimed at dismantling criminal networks and maintaining public safety. Similar intelligence-led operations are being conducted routinely across all police divisions in the capital. Following the completion of preliminary interrogations and paperwork, all adult suspects are scheduled to be produced before the metropolitan magistrate courts to face formal prosecution. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining a visible presence on the streets, urging citizens to report suspicious activities promptly to support police efforts in making urban neighbourhoods safer.
